Quotes about Sportsmanship by mamta Agarwal

Ethics for Infants

Now, children, in this lesson of a rather novel sort
Let us dwell, however briefly, on the moral phase of sport,
Taking cricket, for example, and those vague unwritten laws
Which, when observed, bring harmony, and help the noble cause
Of sportsmanship; but, understand, opinions given here
And rules of conduct specified are just as they appear.
To me and sundry others who see eye to eye with me
While 'tis candidly admitted other folk may disagree.

Eample one: When bowling we'll suppose, without intent,
You hurt a batsman badly so that half his strength be spent.
Now, the law, as I conceive it; is to give the man a chance
And to treat him rather gently while he flounders in trance.
That's sportsmanship, true sportsmanship as it appears to me;
Tho', as I have remarked before, some folk may disagree.
They would set a leg trap for him and attack him out of hand!
But that's a trick that you and I could never understand.

Example two: When bowling you have got a batsman out
But the umpire has not seen it, and the issue is in doubt;

Self Empowerment

Peace within, peace without,
Or be tossed about by
War within, war without.
Enter the island within.
Reflect, thus a new journey begins,
Follow the path Gandhi speaks,
Unalloyed, total, complete,
Love will blossom and violence retreat.

A child's plea- for you, of you, to you! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Fog, fog, go away
Want to go out and play.

Please, Can’t bear the cold.
Am just six and a half years old.

Been waiting for hours and hours.
Nose pressed against the glass.

My feet are getting numb,
am feeling, oh, so glum.

Need the warmth of Sun,
And go out for some fun.

Mama makes me wear gloves,
Can’t feed the lovely dove.

Or else shall slip in bed
Read about the gingerbread.

Berries! ! ! ! !

Mulberries

On a visit to granny in the Doon valley
It was March, the old tree full of Mulberries.
Red, purple teasing from far, ran with cane basket.
Picked one, ate some while the birds created a racket.

Strawberries

Strawberri es in white boxes, one atop other
The hawker sat on his knees, said go no further.
I protest too expensive, not for the masses.
Rich eat raw, make a tart or with cream in glasses.

Wild Berries

On way back from school at noon, attack wild berries.
Are for free and so yummy, home a lot we carry.

Playing Make Believe...! ! ! !

Like a child today I play make believe,
And have bought all your favourite things.
Guavas, purple grapes, dark chocolates, I bring
Telling myself, while arranging, not to grieve…

So young, vivacious, funny and vibrant
With infectious zest, prodding everyone to live
Ailing heart, yet forever ready to share and give
Spasmodic breathe… last words to our parents,

Lament not, thank you both for everything…
But now I must go… a soft smile…God awaits.
I need rest, feeling weak, its kind of getting late
Drifted like an autumn leaf, though it was spring.

I look at all the colourful fruits in the crystal bowl
With quivering lips I try my best, sis to hold
Back my tears, for elders have always told
If you cry and mourn, it hurts the soul…

I wonder who was this guy...! ! ! ! !

I wonder why…
Am I denied
A ride on the swing.

I wonder why…
Am I deprived
Of Colours in my life.

I wonder why…
My bangles were broken
And my bindi wiped…

I wonder why…
On my birth, my parents
Cursed their fate.

I wonder why…
Why am I alive
If all wait for me to die.

Jungle retreat A humble tribute to William Wordsworth! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Earth has nothing more fair to show
Than the trees growing row upon row;
Tall, green and majestic; silence speaks.
My weary eyes just rest on those peaks.

The beauty of the gurgling river,
Water so cold, sends a shiver.
Sparkles like a diamond in morn.
And the day slips into a shimmering gown.

The ducks leisurely swim in wetlands.
Some flutter their wings on white sand.
Others playfully tease their mates in tall grass.
I smile as I watch a few furiously paddle fast.

Hiking through the forests of Sal, now steep,
Now low; I feel the quiet oh, so deep, so deep.
Dear God, I feel so blessed for this trip.
For now I know, oft from city need to slip.

Hunter or the hunted! ! ! ! !

If you be a hunter,
Besides being good marksman,
One needs sportsmanship.

What makes one a hunter;
Fun of the game or sadistic pleasure,
At times I wonder…

Hunted or the hunter
In the playfield, there is a slim chance,
The pursuer end as prey.

So what,
If its a poem or a poet;
Its all in the game,
an occupational hazard...

Those were the days...! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Kicking a small piece of broken earthen pot,
While playing on the roadside, hop scotch.
Or dribbling a ball and throwing it at a team mate.
Screaming as I fell, skidding on the roller skates.

Playing marbles with my kid brother, ten years old
Aiming at queen of carom board with one eye closed.
Trying my hand at basketball, hockey and table tennis.
One day, a bunch of us stormed into YMCA premises.

As there was no club exclusively for girls, back then.
Sir, we said politely you have to treat us at par with men.
Please be kind enough to give us forms for membership.
You are a sportsman, so how about some sportsmanship.

Next day, after submitting our forms, we were in the hall.
Awkwardly aiming and trying to strike a billiard’s ball.
It was so good in my country back then, now I see.
We knew no fear; felt so young, joyous and carefree.

Friends

Friends care about your answer,
When they ask how you are.
Friends stand by you through thick and thin,
When others desert you like a sinking ship.

Friends help you find yourself at every cost,
When you feel completely lost.
Friends quietly and with patience listen,
And speak up when the time is ripe.

Friends never betray your trust,
They are perfect confidants.
Friends keep quiet and don’t judge,
And never for long hold a grudge.

Fiends encourage you when you are low,
And cheer the loudest when you are raring to go.
Friends firmly tell you,
When you are overstretching and must say no.
