Ang buhay ay hagdan na bawat baitang
ay mayroong turo't iniiwang aral.
Sa dulo ng hagdan ako'y nakarating.
Anu-anong aral ba'ng naiwan sa 'kin?

Ang unang baitang, di ko namalayan
Ang aking paligid, hindi nawarian
Ako pa ay sanggol at kulang sa muwang
Ngunit kahit konti, na'y may natutunan
Ang ilan sa aking pangangailangan
Umiyak lang ako'y aking nakakamtan
Pag ako'y nagutom, sa 'ki'y ilalapit
Ang dibdib ni Inang sa gatas ay tigib
Pag ako'y naginaw, ako ay nanlamig
Ako'y mababalot, yakap na mainit
Ngunit gusto ko mang do'n ay manatili
Hindi mangyayari, hindi maaari
Ako nga'y sagana do'n sa pagmamahal
Ngunit kailangang ako ay lumisan

A Letter to the Front

I 'ave written Mick a letter in reply to one uv 'is,
Where 'e arsts 'ow things is goin' where the gums an' wattles is -
So I tries to buck 'im up a bit; to go fer Abdul's fez;
An' I ain't no nob at litrachure; but this is wot I sez:

I suppose you fellers dream, Mick, in between the scraps out them
Uv the land yeh left be'ind yeh when yeh sailed to do yer share:
Uv Collins Street, or Rundle Street, or Pitt, or George, or Hay,
Uv the land beyond the Murray or along the Castlereagh.
An' I guess yeh dream of old days an' the things yeh used to do,
An' yeh wonder 'ow 'twill strike yeh when yeh've seen this business thro';
An' yeh try to count yer chances when yeh've finished wiv the Turk
An' swap the gaudy war game fer a spell o' plain, drab work.

Well, Mick, yeh know jist 'ow it is these early days o' Spring,
When the gildin' o' the wattle chucks a glow on everything.
Them olden days, the golden days that you remember well,
In spite o' war an' worry, Mick, are wiv us fer a spell.

Who Dares To Take This Life From Me, Knows No Better

I

An important thing in living
Is to know when to go;
He who does not know this
Has not far to go,
Though death may come and go
When you do not know.

Come, give me your hand,
Together shoulder and cheek to shoulder
We'll go, sour kana in cheeks
And in the mornings cherry sticks
To gum: the infectious chilli smiles
Over touch-me-not thorns, crushing snails
From banana leaves, past
Clawing outstretched arms of the bougainvillea
To stone the salt-bite mangoes.

Isang paraiso no'n ang Ilog Marikina
Daming binubuhay, daming umaasa
Malinis na tubig, siya'ng pinagkukunan,
Inumin sa banga, panligo sa tapayan
Tumana sa baybay, daming binubuhay
Palakaya sa tubig, iba't-iba ang paraan
Sa inyo ko'y babanggitin, anu-ano ang pangalan

BINGWIT

Ang Bingwit ay isang panghuli ng isda
Na may tangkay, pisi, pabigat at taga
Sa Ingles siya ay rod, hook, line and sinker
Bingwit or Fishing Rod, parehong may pain
Pain namin no'n ay hipon at bulate
Sari-saring isda ang nangahuhuli
Biya, hito, kanduli, minsa'y bakule
Bingwit ay di pare-pareho ang gamit
Merong sa tubig lang ay inilalawit
Merong hinihila matapos ihagis
