Penelope's Song

Little soul, little perpetually undressed one,
Do now as I bid you, climb
The shelf-like branches of the spruce tree;
Wait at the top, attentive, like
A sentry or look-out. He will be home soon;
It behooves you to be
Generous. You have not been completely
Perfect either; with your troublesome body
You have done things you shouldn't
Discuss in poems. Therefore
Call out to him over the open water, over the bright
Water
With your dark song, with your grasping,
Unnatural song--passionate,
Like Maria Callas. Who
Wouldn't want you? Whose most demonic appetite
Could you possibly fail to answer? Soon
He will return from wherever he goes in the
Meantime,
Suntanned from his time away, wanting
His grilled chicken. Ah, you must greet him,
You must shake the boughs of the tree
To get his attention,
But carefully, carefully, lest
His beautiful face be marred
By too many falling needles.

E-bow The Letter

Look up, what do you see?
All of you and all of me
Fluorescent and starry
Some of them, they surprise
The bus ride, I went to write this, 4:00 a.m.
This letter
Fields of poppies, little pearls
All the boys and all the girls sweet-toothed
Each and every one a little scary
I said your name
I wore it like a badge of teenage film stars
Hash bars, cherry mash and tinfoil tiaras
Dreaming of maria callas
Whoever she is
This fame thing, I dont get it
I wrap my hand in plastic to try to look through it
Maybelline eyes and girl-as-boy moves
I can take you far
This star thing, I dont get it
Ill take you over, there
Ill take you over, there
Aluminum, tastes like fear
Adrenaline, it pulls us near
Ill take you over
It tastes like fear, there
Ill take you over
Will you live to 83?
Will you ever welcome me?
Will you show me something that nobody else has seen?
Smoke it, drink
Here comes the flood
Anything to thin the blood
These corrosives do their magic slowly and sweet
Phone, eat it, drink
Just another chink
Cuts and dents, they catch the light
Aluminum, the weakest link
I dont want to disappoint you
Im not here to anoint you
I would lick your feet
But is that sickest move?
I wear my own crown and sadness and sorrow
And whod have thought tomorrow could be so strange?
My loss, and here we go again
Ill take you over, there
Ill take you over, there
Aluminum, tastes like fear
Adrenaline, it pulls us near
Ill take you over
It tastes like fear, there
Ill take you over
Look up, what do you see?
All of you and all of me
Fluorescent and starry
Some of them, they surprise
I cant look it in the eyes
Seconal, spanish fly, absinthe, kerosene
Cherry-flavored neck and collar
I can smell the sorrow on your breath
The sweat, the victory and sorrow
The smell of fear, I got it
Ill take you over, there
Ill take you over, there
Aluminum, tastes like fear
Adrenaline, it pulls us near
Ill take you over
It tastes like fear, there
Ill take you over
Pulls us near
Tastes like fear..
Nearer, nearer
Over, over, over, over
Yeah, look over
Ill take you there, oh, yeah
Ill take you there
Oh, over
Ill take you there
Over, let me
Ill take you there..
There, there, baby, yeah

Creativity Can't Make Up For Depression

Creativity cannot make up for depression
which it attempts to cure,
it can’t replace it with the kind of supersession
that made spurious lure
of Christianity when it induced some Jews
to make up for their loss
of their identity, condemned, they thought, to lose
unless they chose the cross.
No, creativity provides a transient high,
and then becomes a wraith,
for those who’re so depressed they find they cannot fly,
because they’ve lost their faith
in their ability to reproduce success,
which if it is not con-
stantly repeated is a letter whose address
appears to be, “Dear John.”

Inspired by an article (“In Praise of the Crack-U: A novelist peers through darkness to find glittering gems in writing and art”) , by the South African-born novelist Jeanette Winterson, lesbian lover of Julian Barnes’s widow, Pat Kavanagh, in the October 17,2009 WSJ (A report about her lesbian relations includes the information: Blessed with good looks that led many to compare her to Katharine Hepburn, she secured a nonspeaking part in Under Milk Wood. “I never got paid, but I did get to snog Richard Burton, ” she said) . Winterson writes:
The stories are well known; Vincent Van Gogh cut off his ear and went mad. Sylvia Plath gassed herself. Anne Sexton committed suicide. Emily Dickinson was manic-depressive. Virginia Woolf worked through alternating bouts of madness and depression for most of her life. The mad, bad and dangerous wild boys of high art and popular culture make great copy—whether it's Caravaggio on the run for murder after one of his rages, or Allen Ginsberg, naked and drunk, howling through Manhattan. The women—Plath, Frida Kahlo, Maria Callas, Janis Joplin—imploding like dark stars, are the stuff of obsession…. Longing is painful. Every work of art is an attempt to bring into being the object of loss. The pictures, the music, the poems and the performances are an intense engagement with loss. While one is in the act of making, one is not in loss, and one has meaning. The fierce crashes that happen to many creative people when a piece of work is done (read Hemingway on this) come out of the sense that however good the work, it has not answered the loss. The strange thing about creative work is that it can have enormous value for others while its maker is left ravaged. The ancient Greeks understood this as the price of an encounter with a god—the divine forces enter the human and use him or her as an instrument, only to be ultimately destroyed. But I do not believe that creativity is destructive or divine. I believe it is the part of us that gives shape and voice to our innermost reality. This is frightening. Encounters with the real, in particular what we really feel, are something we generally try to avoid. Art mediates the encounter, allowing us to get nearer to our longing and our loss, to risk more, to dare more. Yet for the maker, the exposure is not mediated; it is total and terrifying. That is why so many creative people cut themselves off from their own experience, using drugs or drink or sex or shipwreck to avoid absolute exposure to the pain of creativity. When Whitman turned to face his dark angel, to wrestle with himself, he was acknowledging his own loss, his own longing, his own unstaunched wound.

Part 2 of Trout Fishing in America

ANOTHER METHOD

OF MAKING WALNUT CATSUP

And this is a very small cookbook for Trout Fishing in America

as if Trout Fishing in America were a rich gourmet and

Trout Fishing in America had Maria Callas for a girlfriend

and they ate together on a marble table with beautiful candles.

Compote of Apples

Take a dozen of golden pippins, pare them

nicely and take the core out with a small

penknife; put them into some water, and

let them be well scalded; then take a little

of the water with some sugar, and a few

apples which may be sliced into it, and

let the whole boil till it comes to a syrup;

then pour it over your pippins, and garnish

them with dried cherries and lemon-peel

cut fine. You must take care that your

pippins are not split.

And Maria Callas sang to Trout Fishing in America as

they ate their apples together.

A Standing Crust for Great Pies

Take a peck of flour and six pounds of butter

boiled in a gallon of water: skim it off into

the flour, and as little of the liquor as you

can. Work it up well into a paste, and then

pull it into pieces till it is cold. Then make

it up into what form you please.

And Trout Fishing in America smiled at Maria Callas as

they ate their pie crust together.

A Spoonful Pudding

Take a spoonful of flour, a spoonful of

cream or milk, an egg, a little nutmeg,

ginger, and salt. Mix all together, and

boil it in a little wooden dish half an hour.

If you think proper you may add a few

currants .

And Trout Fishing in America said, "The moon's coming

out." And Maria Callas said, "Yes, it is."

Another Method of Making Walnut Catsup

Take green walnuts before the shell is

formed, and grind them in a crab-mill,

or pound them in a marble mortar.

Squeeze out the juice through a coarse

cloth, and put to every gallon of juice

a pound of anchovies, and the same

quantity of bay-salt, four ounces of

Jamaica pepper, two of long and two of

black pepper; of mace, cloves, and

ginger, each an ounce, and a stick of

horseradish. Boil all together till

reduced to half the quantity, and then

put it into a pot. When it is cold, bottle

it close, and in three months it will be

fit for use.

And Trout Fishing in America and Maria Callas poured

walnut catsup on their hamburgers.

PROLOGUE TO GRIDER CREEK

Mooresville, Indiana, is the town that John Dillinger came

from, and the town has a John Dillinger Museum. You can

go in and look around.

Some towns are known as the peach capital of America or

the cherry capital or the oyster capital, and there's always

a festival and the photograph of a pretty girl in a bathing suit.

Mooresville, Indiana, is the John Dillinger capital of America.

Recently a man moved there with his wife, and he discovered

hundreds of rats in his basement. They were huge, slowmoving

child-eyed rats.

When his wife had to visit some of her relatives for a few

days, the man went out and bought a .38 revolver and a lot

of ammunition. Then he went down to the basement where

the rats were, and he started shooting them. It didn't bother

the rats at all. They acted as if it were a movie and started

eating their dead companions for popcorn.

The man walked over to a rat that was busy eating a friend

and placed the pistol against the rat's head. The rat did not

move and continued eating away. When the hammer clicked

back, the rat paused between bites and looked out of the corner

of its eye. First at the pistol and then at the man. It was a kind

of friendly look as if to say, "When my mother was young she

sang like Deanna Durbin. "

The man pulled the trigger.

He had no sense of humor.

There's always a single feature, a double feature and an

eternal feature playing at the Great Theater in Mooresville,

Indiana: the John Dillinger capital of America.

'Red Headed Beggar Girl'
Crawling Towards Me on Your Knees,
Against the Backdropp of The

With My Black Eye Liner I Draw You
As a Crude Stick Figure on The
Smudged Up Mirror, of a
Filthy Public Washroom,
I Finger Paint You as The

Wintering a Tropical Soundscape of My Heart,
I Scribble You In Gold & Silver & Violet Crayon
On a Pink Piece of Construction

& Wonder if They REALLY

'There is No Chosen Race in Nature'
….The Droppings of Last Weeks Trip out
are Still Scattered upon our Floor,
You Stand, Sandwhiched Alone Here, WHOLE!
In a Divided Kingdom Between
Heaven & Earth! Death,

Ready to Flee away from Me
With Shelley's 'West Wind', You Stand!

Have Been Laid out Mercilessly
For our Insatiable Eyes
Countless Times, You Stand!

Have Fallen Upon Deaf Ears,
You Stand for 30 Years! Where only The

You have NO F##king EQUAL!
To You, Dear Girl,
There Can NEVER! BE a Sequel!
Our Smoldering FIRE!

Meant to Be Women & Men have been
Dramatically Altered!
What it Means to be a 'Human Being'
Is Next! ?

'Would it Be permissible for a
Miseducated Alien to try to the
Truth & Beauty Pill'?

Old age is Savagely Beating,
Beating! BEATING! ! !
Our Fleeting Beauty & Youth,
To a Bloody Pulp!
So we Must Make Haste,
Because We're all Innocent Little Children,
Infested with Microscopic Bugs!
Being Molested,
BY the Perverted Hands of Time!
O, the Crude Violent Colors!
Lo! 'The Horrible Honest Toil'-
Hark! The Hot Cubicles of Diseased Pepper! !
'Alas! The Hopeless Wretches'!
can our Broken Snow Flakes still get Hung?
Must the Bewildered Music of The Bruised
Articulate Oboe always
Get Smeared
BY
Grotesque Monotone, Liza?

Must You always Remember the
Unforgettable times You Opened up
Your Audacious,
Permanently Sealed Mouth
To Speak!
& A Million Different Exotic Birds
Flew out.

Must our Samson Always get Seized,
By the Philistines,

Like Gondolas in the WIND?

Marcello Mastroianni

My poor childhood memories
Going to the Cinema somewhere in seventies,
And how I watched in the gallery (not the balcony)
In Cinema hall the lowest ticket.
With my loving brother/companion 'Lalith'.
Oh! My hero a charismatic personality
Marcello Mastroianni a prominent Italian actor of Jewish descent.
Who once said; 'I believe in nature, love, affection, my work and my friends,
I love people and life,
Perhaps that's why life loved me in return.'
He died of cancer at the age of 72.
And I never forget the movie Vittorio De Sica's 'Sunflower'
Marcello and Sophia Loren for their fantastic perfomance.
The sad theme (The parting in Milan) from Sunflower by Henry Mancini
Still haunts me of my complicate solitary journey.

*To Alison & Jerry in gratitude for their goodwill I offer this sad memory.

Pizzeria

I was serving Pizza to the tables
A Restaurant in Venice, Italy.
An old man came in a Gondola with a pipe in his mouth.
I greeted him and he ordered a dish.
I said; 'You resembled Signor Alberto Moravia.
'If I am not mistaken the movie 'A Ghost at noon or Contempt', filmed by Jean-Luc Godard, is that your novel? '
After the meal he just smiled and gave his name card and left the Restaurant leaving all his change on the table.
As soon as I woke up early in the morning
I grumbled with my wife about the name card.
Then she jumped at me and cried; 'You Rasputin must be having a date with a tart? '
I just kept quiet and thought of my strange dream.

* I remember in my school days our film society arranged an Italian film festival, slightly come to my mind some film cut-outs of Jean-Luc Godard & Vittorio De Sica.

The Bicycle thief

Vittorio De Cica
Life and career; Born into poverty in Sora, Lazio (in either 1901 or 1902 - sources are divided) , he began his career as a theatre actor in the early 1920s and joined Tatiana Pavlova's theatre company in 1923. In 1933 he founded his own company with his wife Giuditta Rissone and Sergio Tofano. The company performed mostly light comedies, but they also staged plays by Beaumarchais, and worked with famous directors like Luchino Visconti. His meeting with Cesare Zavattini was a very important event: together they created some of the most celebrated films of the neorealistic age, like Sciuscià (Shoeshine) and Ladri di biciclette (Bicycle Thieves, released as The Bicycle Thief in the U.S.A.) , both of which De Sica directed. De Sica is more well-known in the UK for appearing in the TV series The Four Just Men produced by Sapphire Films and distributed by ITC Entertainment, originally broadcast in 1959.
I have walked more than fifteen miles
As the doctor said if I want to live long
Walk as much as I can.
Almost tired and I saw a desperate bicycle at the roadside.
It's not locked and when I reached there
This miraculous cycle talked;
'Go ahead! '
I rode home and it's close upon midnight.
I stopped on the way to buy a loaf of bread
And Aunt Jemina's original bottle of syrup.
(My beloved make pan cakes for the breakfast.)
It's not there when I returned from the shop.
I laughed and murmured to myself;
'O my sin has been cancelled already
And I have no regrets anymore,
The total profit goes for you
And be the winner of the race! '

*God gives the nuts, but he does not crack them.
-Old Proverb

Complimentary Epigram on Maria Riddell

"Praise Woman still," his lordship roars,
"Deserv'd or not, no matter?"
But thee, whom all my soul adores,
Ev'n Flattery cannot flatter:

Maria, all my thought and dream,
Inspires my vocal shell;
The more I praise my lovely theme,
The more the truth I tell.

A Sonata For Maria

Maria, where are you going
after tonight Maria?
Will you forget the last night
we had together?
Will you deny me forever?

Dressed, and clean, and
neat and prim and proper,
Maria, will you forget
my name?

I regret Maria belonging to
someone else
for i truly love you.
