The Couple Upstairs

Shoes instead of slippers down the stairs,
She ran out with her clothes

And the front door banged and I saw her
Walking crookedly, like naked, to a car.

She was not always with him up there,
And yet they seemed inviolate, like us,
Our loves in sympathy. Her going

Thrills and frightens us. We come awake
And talk excitedly about ourselves, like guests.

Is She Really Going Out With Him?

Pretty women out walking with gorillas down my street
From my window I'm staring while my coffee grows cold
Look over there! Where?
There's a lady that I used to know
She's married now or engaged or something
so I am told

Is she really going out with him?
Is she really gonna take him home tonight?
Is she really going out with him?
Cause if my eyes don't deceive me
Theres something going wrong around here...round here

Tonights the night when I go to all the parties down my street
I wash my hair and I kid myself I look real smooth
Look over there! Where?
Here comes Amy with her new boyfriend
They say that looks don't count for much
and so there goes your proof

Is she really going out with him?
Is she really gonna take him home tonight?
Is she really going out with him?
Cause if my eyes don't deceive me
Theres something going wrong around here...around here

But if looks could kill
There's a man there whos more down as dead
Cause I've had my fill
Listen you

I Saw My Friend At The Front Door

I saw my friend to the front door
I stood in the golden dust.
Momentous sounds issued
From the little belfry close by.
Tossed! Such a made-up word-
What am I, a flower or a letter?
But my eyes already gaze grimly
Into the darkened looking glass.

Start of a home invasion

On a weekday evening
while some people,
were watching the late comedy show
on television, laughing or smiling

when others were dining out romantically,
falling more in love
with candles sparkling
while their eyes glittered

when the extended show
at the cinema Nuevo was almost ending
which was portraying
Romeo and Juliet from Britain by satellite

when a father had helped his son
prepare for the next day’s mathematics test,
the family had already had their evening prayers
a loving husband had kissed his wife goodnight

when most of the lights
in the houses in the neighbourhood
was switched off
with only amber street lights shining

when most of the people
in the neighbourhood was already asleep
and the dogs in the neighbourhood
stopped howling at the moon and were sleeping

the falcons armed to the teeth
unexpectedly crashed their black trucks
through the outside gate, broke down the garage door,
broke down the front door

opened and broke doors inside a house,
causing destruction and havoc
in the life
of a innocent citizen

and later admitted that it was
the wrong address,
where they had made
a tremendous mess.

Her Eyes

Up from the street and the crowds that went,
Morning and midnight, to and fro,
Still was the room where his days he spent,
And the stars were bleak, and the nights were slow.

Year after year, with his dream shut fast,
He suffered and strove till his eyes were dim,
For the love that his brushes had earned at last, --
And the whole world rang with the praise of him.

But he cloaked his triumph, and searched, instead,
Till his cheeks were sere and his hairs were gray.
"There are women enough, God knows," he said. . . .
"There are stars enough -- when the sun's away."

Then he went back to the same still room
That had held his dream in the long ago,
When he buried his days in a nameless tomb,
And the stars were bleak, and the nights were slow.

And a passionate humor seized him there --
Seized him and held him until there grew
Like life on his canvas, glowing and fair,
A perilous face -- and an angel's, too.

Angel and maiden, and all in one, --
All but the eyes. -- They were there, but yet
They seemed somehow like a soul half done.
What was the matter? Did God forget? . . .

But he wrought them at last with a skill so sure
That her eyes were the eyes of a deathless woman, --
With a gleam of heaven to make them pure,
And a glimmer of hell to make them human.

God never forgets. -- And he worships her
There in that same still room of his,
For his wife, and his constant arbiter
Of the world that was and the world that is.

And he wonders yet what her love could be
To punish him after that strife so grim;
But the longer he lives with her eyes to see,
The plainer it all comes back to him.

Signs of the time

As time passes
there are brand new cars
in which armed black people sit
dressed in black suits, with dark windows

beyond which they hide
while they do their duty
as agents of the government
and destroy criminals?

While white nurses, artisans,
fired mine workers
are begging for food at DJ’s restaurant,
some with degrees stay in squatter’s settlements
or in the veldt or in the bush

it is as if the world
is turning on its head in this country
and able persons are jobless on the street,
with incompetents in every government position.

As time passes the devil is totally loose:
the Falcons, who first had been the scorpions
(a South African agency similar to the American F.B.I) brake in
at the wrong house, in the middle of the night

breaking down the front gate,
breaking down the garage door,
breaking down the front door
forcing every room’s door open

breaking and destroying just what they find,
going through all the possessions
of a innocent man
destroying left and right and centre

without taking notice
or even realizing
that they are making a mistake,
they cause

more than a hundred thousand rands damage,
violate a citizen’s privacy,
his right to a free existence
so as if they can just come and go

as they want to
and when the owner
of the house wants to get a summons
they admit that they

by mistake harassed him
had broken all the mentioned things,
had caused huge damage,
say that he must make a list

and claim from them,
make a list
of witch they will pay
every single thing

and surely the man in the street,
the general citizen
have to take the money from his pocket
for taxes

and a person can only wonder
where they next are going to invade,
whose life they next will threaten,
whose things they are going to break?

Ode to the Wind 2

i am wind i caress
every skin i fall on

i float with the tide
and dance with the moon

as we glide over the sea
the waves sweep us on a silver path
serenade us the lustre of the moment

the moon shivers, i twirl, the trees rustle,
clouds part to give us way to a crescendo of fun

everytime i am around, the feet of the universe
spring to action, things dance, and i dance too
spreading a joie de vivre

i am a vagabond of the wildest kind
a gypsy, a tramp, a born traveller
holding a carte blanche to everywhere
in summer a thousand fans work me into action

those who ride me go on to build new lives
i had the reputation to take people
from continent to continent
to the remotest places, if they only cared
to put up a sail for me to carry them with me

nothing can stop me as i tarry from
coast to coast, village to village,
city to city, ocean to ocean
sprinkling cheerful fragrances of spring
unfurl summer's nerves, making
fair ladies sprint with pride as their graceful
luxurious crown dances round them like dreams
a million artists wait for the swirl of autumn scarlet
to work volume into their canvasses

oftentimes, you would see me sweeping
the streets here and there; leaves somersault
to my path as we play twins on a fiesta

when i do rest, i can stand on a single hair
static like a frog on a lotus leaf
a sadguru meditation, letting the self
to a land of nowhere

i hold many faces, but hide many till
things get blown away, the masks taken
the battle of opposite begins
the hot and cold air tailing each other in rages

i will be worse than the Indian Goddess Kali
eyes fiery as a volcano, a wasp out to sting
i tear down houses, uproot trees, throwing the ocean
helter skelter so that water springs everywhere

my face then is nothing other than vengeance and death,
i take away everything in my way
i am the Yama from hades and nobody escapes
the twist of fate i administer

i hold many faces, at my sweetest,
i can dance like Nataraja the cosmic dancer
moving earth, sun and moon, and the whole universe
with the tilt of my feet, swaying of my hips
and the turns of my fingers and heads

i bring good news to the deserving,
those who sweat for their work
a whole padi field waves in golden delight
as i cross the path to bring news of harvest
on the feet of a romancing couple i take them
from one high to the other of remembrances
in the worst of winter, i help sprinkle frost
everywhere - window panes, stairs to the front door,
windscreens, and our parting memories

Down The Road

(Van Morrison)
Well it's down the road I go
And I got those worried
Lonesome homesick Jones
Way on down the road
Well it's down the road I go
Well I got the blues
From way down in New Orleans
Way on down the road
And I got to be so far away
Oh don't you see
All our memories, dreams and reflections
That keep haunting me
Well it's down the road I go
And I hear those gypsy voices
Calling me
Way on down the road
Well I got to be
So far away in my memory
Dreams and reflections come on
Keep on back haunting me
Well it's down the road I go
Well I got the blues
From down in New Orleans
Way on down the road
Well it's down the road I go
Well I ve got the worried
Lonesome homesick Jones
Way on down the road
Way on down the road
Oh down the road
Way on down the road baby come on
Way on down the road
Trying to find my way back home
Trying to find my way back home
Further on down the road
Trying to find my way back home
Further on down the road
Down the road of peace
Down the road of peace
Down the road of peace baby

Walk Straight Down The Middle

Cant move my arms,
Cant move my legs.
Cant say no,
I cant say yes.
Cant help myself.
I need your help.
(we go)
Ooh, ooh, what do we do,
Now we just cant move?
Were calling out for middle street.
Ooh, ooh, what do we do,
Now we just cant move?
We hang on to every line,
And walk straight down the middle of it.
He thought he was gonna die,
But he didnt.
She thought she just couldnt cope,
But she did.
We thought it would be so hard,
But it wasnt...
It wasnt easy, though!
Cant say yes,
I cant say no.
Cant begin,
Cant let go...
Help me now.
(we go)
Ooh, ooh, what do we do,
Now we just cant move?
Were calling out for middle street.
Ooh, ooh, what do we do,
Now we just cant move?
We hang on to every line,
And walk straight down the middle of it.
He thought he was gonna die,
But he didnt.
She thought she could never cope,
But she did.
We thought it was all over,
But it wasnt...
It hadnt started yet.
And walk straight down the middle of it.
And walk straight down the middle of it.
D^^^^^^^^^^ d^^^^^^^^^^, calling out for middle street.
Calling out for middle street, d^^^^^^^^^^ d^^^^^^^^^^^.
Walking straight down the middle of it. d^^^^^^^^^^^^^^.

The Show Must Go On

Ive been trapped in the madness,
From the shadows of sadness
I laugh it away.
Ive been blind to the passion
While the whole world is flashing
I stash it away.
While Im singing of freedom,
Im trying to sell
What I never had.
Hoping Ill be released from my own kind of hell
Cause I lost the key to my past.
The show must go on.
It seems like theres something Im leaving behind.
The show must go on.
Cause the dreams that Im having,
Im having all the time.
The show must go on.
There will be no confessions,
Cause Id only be guessing just where to begin.
Theres only one thing Im knowing
This feeling aint blowing
Away with the wind.
And Im tired of turning my back on myself
Throwing truth away.
Let the fire burn down the front door to myself
And give me a season of play.
The show must go on,
I just keep pretending to live for the game.
The show must go on.
I just keep on bending the rules to fit the pain.
Its time for collecting
What Ive been neglecting.
Its gonna be a little strange.
Cause one day Ill be gone,
And Ill be back in time(town? ).
Nothings gonna, nothings gonna
Be the same.
The show must go on,
And I just keep pretending to live for your game,
The show must go on,
I just keep on bending the rules to fit the pain.
Put on the face,
Win every race,
Im just so strong cant you see,
And I keep up the pace,
I wont leave a trace.
Of .........................
Still going on, still going on.
The show must go on,
The show must go on.
(fade out)

Four Years Old

Hey
Why'd you wake me from my nap?
I'm not in the mood
To play your games
Or sit on your lap

You
Where's my Yankees drinking glass?
I want some juice
And I want it now
So you better move your ass
And feel bad for me
'Cuz I'm just getting over a cold

I'm four years old!
I'm four years old!
I'm four years old!
Somebody better tie my shoes!

Now
I run down the hall
I scream and I yell
And I cry 'cuz I fell
Bring the rubbing alcohol

Outside
I get mud on my shoe
I come back in the house
I get it on the rug
The cleanging's up to you
And I won't take a bath
Unless you make me Spaghetti-O's

I'm four years old!
I'm four years old!
I'm four years old!
Mommy reads to me at night
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Well
I can't have a job
And I can't go to school
If no grownups are around
I can't go near the pool
I'm not alowed to climb
My neighbor's apple tree
I'm not allowed to sit
Too close to the TV
I don't know how to drive
And I don't know how to spell
But if I hear my brother cursing
I do know how to tell
'Cuz he made me eat some bread
That was covered in mold

I'm four years old!
I'm four years old!
I'm four years old!
I just threw up on my grandmother

Interpretation

And they cannot be recaptured except
in this mind, in all of the universe.
It’s what old men do while they still can,
A substitute for all that they can’t:
repeated flights to unseen glories
they once passed through too hurriedly.
Each has his own specific details,
of commonly haunted ecstacies
we like to believe are beyond compare,
and too much with us to ever release.

Mine were simple things:
the creaking of a certain window frame -
no, there was more than that.
The bedroom light was the first sign.
It flicked on and a sudden surge
of wattage shot through me.
Seconds later, darkness
and I’d have to wait
‘til the window creaked
and her face took shape
through the open frame.
She always smiled.
And for sixty minutes
the net of the heavens
swept down and lifted me.

Or, at 8 on winter nights
-after I’d whistled the sign –
(and Andy Williams was finished)
the hall lamp was lit,
the front door opened
and she’d step out,
in anorak with scarf,
tight trousers and
a couple of inches of heel.
She was only five feet three.
The first few seconds were killing
in their thrill.

Or under the light
at old maggie’s gate:
coming out from her visit,
backlit, chatting to Maggie
the blue flames of her eyes on mine
striking me light as air,
excited as any charged particle.

But age and time
keep grinding away.
The art of nature
so finely woven,
so perfectly pitched,
self renews through us
adapts itself beyond us;
a smouldering blaze
that endlessly burns
mortality for fuel.

Last night I dreamt for the first time,
of her and I in black and white,
faded images of the two of us;
riven with ambiguity
and just as intense as ever.
Walking together,
out of the scene of the dream,
she pointed out a plum tree;
and when I looked I could see
only a lime, in shades of green,
hanging with unripened fruit.

Weekend (feat. Esthero)

Verse One]
I called Tab on Wednesday night
So we could make plans for Thursday night
He said "we could go hit the peapods"
I was like yeah, that's my favorite spot
Plus I like it there, cuz I got love on the list
High powered juice, where I don't even get frisked
Walk up in the place and get love from the misses
Pounds from my brothers, cause they knowing that this is
the place to be to let it all out
But when the weekend come, the weekend come, y'all could come
So go tell ya momma come and ya papa come
Go to spin the record so we can get dumb
Place packed, capacity maximum
Due to my man Polo Promotion
And I can't wait to go out and hear some
[Chorus: Esthero]
Jumping music, swift DJ's
Smoke machines and laser rays
Look out weekend cause, here I come
Because weekends were, werrrre
[Verse Two]
Walk in the club at like 10 o' clock
And the spot is hot, blowing up rooftops
Its Thursday night and the night is young
Four day weekend, time to have some fun
DJ's cut it up, drop them joints
Everybody's been waiting to dance and make noise
B-Boys, let me see you break it down
And ladies, let your hips move around
Its the sound of the BEP family
Got a poet named Life and a sister Kimy (worrrrd up)
And the blood of Abraham (worrrrd up)
So let's get ready for the jam
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
It was a Thursday night and the party was bumpin'
And the bass was thumpin' and people was jumpin'
And taboo's at the front door comin'
Taboo's at the front door comiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin
and
and (here he come now)
and
nah, nah, nah
[Verse Three]
Yo, Mister Will.i.am (Mister Will.i.am)
When oh when (Mister Will.i.am)
Get our boogie on when the weekend COME
Check the peapod, cuz the vibes is STRONG
Selenas, Philipinas, they come one by ONE
All lined up, and they ready for FUN
Short one's, tall one's, beautiful ONES
B-boys, B-girls, ready to WHAT
Breaking and shaking when we doing our ish
J-Rock from the Beat Junkies ready to mix
Cuz they cuttIng up the wax for everybody
Come on over cuz were having a party
We lighting up the sky with the burning STAR
Throw your hands in the air, if you know who you ARE
Cuz we jumpin' around with the Broshigeez
And get blessed by the beat pharmacy
cause they hittin you with
[Chorus]
....worrrrd up

A sleepless grace

A sleepless grace
~
It is in her quiet grace
the touch of her fair hand
the sleepless night
seems to pass so gentle
I look to her eyes
and find my soul rooted
deeply in place
like the chestnut tree
unmoving and steadfast
there for many a year
~
she holds my heart
in the realms of her own
the whispers of conversation
fill the gaps of silences
we talk of the day now past
and those days to come
we talk of the little nothings
we talk to hear each other
comforting to a sleep
~
I lay her upon my chest
her ear to my heart
listening to my every truth
I hold nothing from her
as she holds nothing from me
and there I celebrate
her gentle quiet grace
which claimed my heart
in the sleepless night

Waitin For Your Love

Well Ive been spendin all my spare time
Sittin home alone
Listenin for the front door
And starin at the phone
Ever since that night in texas
Youre all thats in my brain
And long distance aint the answer
My little heart cant stand the strain
Chorus:
Im a waitin for your love
Waitin every night and day
Hopin youll come by and get me, baby
Take me far away
Im a waitin for your love
Girl, I aint afraid to say
That youre all I ever wanted
So come and steal my heart away
Well I was never one to beg
You know I always played it cool... so cool
But youve got me on my knees now
Youre the exception to the rule
Well there aint no turnin back
You know Im too far gone
So I keep the front door open
And keep the porch light on
Chorus (x 2)
Youre all I ever wanted
So come and steal my heart away

Wetting My Levi's 501 Jeans

I'm longing for a changes in my life's landscape
Stone cold of gloomed darkness...
beyond reach....
no peace
Accompanying a sickness is a great sacrifices....
The moon is the woman.....
above us
Go to a person
who can smell you anywhere and every where
He's gonna be your true lifeline....
Trust me
The picture is the picture of never ending circle of life...
and beneath.......
The paths to wanting and rejection
Changes will come when we've changed ourselves

Sunday bloody Sunday...
I stood before me......
54 strewn bodies
all over the bloody places.....
When I was a journalist
back in Middle East
I'm already dead....
but cheating death
Back then
My breakfast was... when I woke up
in the morning..
I felt alive and had the chance
to live another day
No more hungers
No more fears...
of wetting my Levi's 501 jeans...
carried away.... and thinking
of the unspeakable...
unthinkable
death
TodayI told my kids
There's a moment I walked a long walk...
3 miles to school
Now they'd treasure each sorrow and pain..
with a deep sigh....
Tomorrow..
I'll be braver
To face another...
Encounters
Everyday is a new life
Think about it
Do not waste it...
even an ounce

Five For Country Music

I. Insomnia

The bulb at the front door burns and burns.
If it were a white rose it would tire of blooming
through another endless night.

The moon knows the routine;
it beats the bushes from east to west
and sets empty-handed. Again the one
she is waiting for has outrun the moon.

II. Old Money

The spotted hands shake as they polish the coins.

The shiny penny goes under the tongue,
the two silver pieces
weighted by pyramids
will shut down the eyes.

All the rest is paper,
useless in any world but this.

III. Home Movie

She knows that walk, that whistle, that knock.

It's the black wolf who sticks
his floured paw underneath the door.

She tries not to open. One look at his face
and she'll drop the gun. He will pick it up
and turn it on her where she waits,
her eyes shining, her hands over her head.

IV. Golden Boy

Whitewashed, the eyes refuse you.

And so the mouth must be serene,
the muscles play, the body
take an easy stance

to divert you from the two
boarded-up chambers
where someone has died.

V. Washing Day

Each year her laundry line gets lighter.
One by one they disappear,
ten little Indians. They take their socks,
their jeans, their stiff plaid shirts.

Above the Ford on its concrete blocks,
striped and zippered,
her cotton dress flutters on and on.

I Live In A Place

I live in a place,
Now free of conflict.
I live in a space that is blessed,
To have unrest...
Stop at the front door.

I live in a place,
I didn't recognize at first.
It was silent and patient.
And it kept within me thirsting,
For more of it.

I live in a place,
Now free of conflict.
I live in a space that is blessed,
To have unrest...
Stop at the front door.
