Charter schools are public schools that operate, to a certain extent, outside the system. They have more control over their teachers, curriculum and resources. They also have less money than public schools.

Outside The Box

We’ve been conditioned to accept the “Status quo”
To “Go along to get along” seems to be the norm
When our natural way is to live “Outside the box”
A guileless, loving-heart is the best way to conform

The System

When it is not black then it is white,
For you and i know the truth going on around us;
But the sytem had made our lives so.
I have no child and my husband is too old,
And like a wild vine in the field of love;
But the system had made our lives so.

Outside the snow is falling

Outside the snow is falling,
are gliding like pieces of paper coming down,
the icy wind is biting
when I brush off some flakes
and now it falls continually
when you phone, quite amused,
with the signal sometimes growing faint
while you say that you desire me.

The Morning Light Is Outside/ The Morning Sorrow Within

The morning light is outside
The morning sorrow within
Which will overcome today
I don't know
I try to be in the light
But the sorrow at times is overwhelming
How can I make the sorrow the light?
I can't
The sorrow itself must
And sometimes it does
Often it does
Later in the day.

Outside The Wall

All alone, or in twos,
The ones who really know you,
Walk up and down outside the wall.
Some hand in hand,
Some gather together in bands,
The bleeding hearts and artists,
Make their stand.
And when theyve given you their all,
Some stagger and fall.
After all its not easy,
Banging your heart against some mad buggers wall.

The Morning Lights Outside The Kitchen Door...

must it be habit
that makes you turn off the light
outside the kitchen
at the break of day
when the birds start to
sing their songs

you save on electricity
in the same manner that you budget
your time and
money

i've tried it once
not putting off the lights from morning
till night

some early birds that pick the early worms
passing by the house
with closed doors and windows
with lights not switched off
think that i am
dead

Outside The August Wind is Playing

Outside the August wind is playing
swinging branches up and down,
grabbing on flowers that are still standing
with fingers which are desiring
and I wait upon birds to appear again
after their around-the-world journey
while knobs are on the branches of fruit trees,
ready to unfold in blossoms
in early spring
but the cold is making its presence known
with ripe lying spread out in the early morning
while the winter season
is still doing its icy thing.

On a hillock outside the city

On a hillock outside the city
a monument build from marble and stone
guards forevermore,
catching the sun’s
rays one new day dutifully.

It tells true stories
of a nation’s struggle to survive and be free
from oppression and a great trek
across the veldt and over high mountains,
of vicious wild men
and the belief
in the creator God
who came to aid
to save from total annihilation
when they called on Him.

Outside the House

Walking yesterday in an outlying neighbourhood,
I went by the house
I used to go to when I was very young.
There Eros with his wonderful power
laid hold of my body.

And yesterday
when I walked down the old road,
shops, pavement, stones,
walls and balconies and windows-
all were suddenly made beautiful by the spell of love:
there was nothing ugly left there.

And as I stood staring at the door,
stood lingering outside the house,
my whole being radiated
the sensual passion stored up inside me.

Outside The Pen And Parchment

Sitting at a table
outside the Pen and Parchment
waiting for some poets to come along
to add rhyme to summer’s song.
A nice cold drink in front of me
to refresh the parts
other drinks seem to miss.
The sun was high in the sky,
everyone around was sweating,
all of them except me.
I was wearing a black suit and shirt and tie,
my trademark you could call it.
Every time they looked at me
they seem to melt a little more,
but I was cooler than my drink
that sat in front of me.

Outside the first spring rain is falling

Outside the first spring rain is falling
while it is still piercing winter
and there are flowers already blossoming,
sparrows singing cheerfully in a group,

rejoicing already about the magic that spring brings
and in my heart there is love that wants to flower for you,
a feeling that pierces the separation
and around me new life is emerging

and speedy I want to take you in my arms,
show you the beauty of my garden, the beauty of my love,
piercing the chilly cold,
bringing life to that which is still frozen.

Outside The Rain Begins To Fall

do you remember it?
the rain, it was outside us when we parted
the boat left a furrow on the sea
and the waves ran until everything was calm
and then i went inside a room
the windows all glass
the drapes dusty
and the tables and chairs so cold
like our feelings
and then outside the rain began to fall
when you left
i just watched the dissipation
just that
things happened and we let them be
we were not the masters of our fate
the stars write their lines
and they take the course
of the journey
we followed suit without a single question

Outside the spring is blossoming

(after Dorothy Parker)

Outside the spring is blossoming
while a myriad of birds sing,
later in the afternoon
it might be raining

but it matters not,
even the summer days that I have got
are far too quickly passing
and some are cold and others hot.

There’s a new lady that I might adore
waiting at my front door
and I wonder what will be
her impression of me?

I see her sparkling eyes and shining hair
while she looks lovely and fair,
if she stays or leaves, such things have happened before,
she will be only one more.

Outside the Café

Outside the Café
where I was having coffee,
a red BMW without number plates
died on the driver
and was flashing lights
and its hooter went off.

Inside of it I saw a face
of a ugly white man,
with a wig upon his head
and the look in his eye
spelled out dread.

Be careful
he’s got a gun,
the café’s owner warned
and I looked away
as if the man was not there.

Thrice I called
that one zero triple one number
from my cell phone
and no police did appear,
while the criminal was near
as if my calls was in vain.

No cars are available
they said
and on the next morning,
a squadron of police
was knocking my door down
and eight cars and a helicopter
was waiting outside.

Slave 2 The System

Slave) {repeat in song}
Slave, yeah {x2}
Slave 2 the system here before I was born
Slave 2 the master, workin' me till I'm worn
The only penthouse I can count on's a big black ball and chain
Slave 2 the system, the future's all arranged
Oh, U better fetch that water, boy {x2}
Slave 2 the system
Thompson's my last name, but my daddy's name is Lloyd
The farther back I trace it, the more it becomes null and void
All my life I've struggled just 2 be called a boy
Slave 2 the system, oh what a joy
Oh, U better fetch that water, boy
Hell if I do!
(Oh, U better fetch that water, boy)
Oh, I'm just a slave 2 the system
Here before I was born
Slave 2 the master, workin' me till I'm worn
Slave 2 the system

Outside the Windy City

Outside the Windy City
lives the Lady Finnegan -
Carol dearly loves the Lord Jehovah
and is a part of His earthly plan.

Her heart has been pierced
by God's Holy Spirit;
for she placed her life before Him
and has chosen to submit.

Her adoration for the King
has burst forth with heart's joy,
from reading her great nephew's literature
within the borders of Illinois.

Now she's become God's messenger
via her gifts of Joe's Christian poetry -
For the fragrance of God's Love
envelopes her with scriptural potpourri.

Blessed to be a blessing,
her friendship has touched me -
For we have found common ground
between kinship and a love of poetry.

Dedicated to my Great Aunt Carol Finnegan,
the sister of my maternal Grandmother Marguerite Massa.

I Was Lonely Outside The World Of The Anthologized Poets

I WAS LONELY OUTSIDE THE WORLD OF THE ANTHOLOGIZED POETS

I was lonely outside the world of the anthologized poets-
I was lonely in not being good enough -
I was lonely in not being known -
I was lonely in having given a lifetime to never having been heard-
I was lonely in not being among the voices that will endure-
They were there on those heights
And all around them words of praise were being sung-
And I was lonely alone with my own little voice
Crying and crying and crying
Trying to write and afraid-
A lifetime had been given
And they were there on the glad height
And down in the low alone of my own lost words
Writing and writing forever my own lonely life away
I was as much alone as someone who would have been born in poetry and never was.
