Winning the Pulitzer is not that big a deal. I have seen hundreds of plays that have won the prize and you couldn't sit half way through it. The Pulitzer is a common prize that means very little.

First Encounter - Sylvia Chang

twin pity

the way sylvia Chang looks at
the less than pretty journalist
which makes her so conscious of
her less than favourable endowments

a pity for the star for making me
feel she places looks on
so high a pedestal

a pity for the journalist for having
to carry out her work feeling an inadequacy
she has really no control over

That was more than 20 years ago in my first interview with the legendary Taiwanese actress Sylvia Chan at the then Merlin Hotel, now the Concorde. The young female reporter was one of those you would label as 'not pretty'. And that became more obvious when she was right in front of an actress known around half the world. There was so much that went on that made me feel bad more about Sylvia than the poor reporter.

News Flash

A multitude of sunflowers was found swaying in the field this morning between 5 and 6 a.m. Our reporter had a direct experience of being sucked in the happy yellow colour as the sunflower heads were rising towards early morning sunbeams. He claims the sunflower leaves turned into hands clapping up in the air in the rhythm of the dawn resurrection. The ambulance car got hurt while attempting to save our reporter from the fit of a passionate bliss. Accidental passengers willing to be interviewed confirmed the news by sending thousands of kisses into the air. Whether the incident was a collective hallucination or divine interference is yet to be investigated.

I don't think that the Pulitzer should be given the way it is. I think the competition should be anonymous. I think completely different people would win it if the names were taken off because a lot of it is done on relationships and names.

Winning the Pulitzer is wonderful and it's an honor and I feel so humbled and so grateful, but I think that I'll think of it very much as the final sort of final moment for this book and put it behind me along with the rest of the book, as I write more books.
