When You're Not Trying To

Let me try to explain
It's not the roses or champagne
That really touch my heart
How can I make you see
You're the best at lovin' me
When you don't know you are
(Chorus)
Baby it's not the way that you reach out while you're sleepin'
And gently hold my hand the whole night though
It's how you listen when I'm pouring out my feelings
Baby when I feel the most for you
Is when you're not tryin' to
You don't need to rehearse
Some sweet romantic words
To whisper in my ear
So just forget the poetry
What comes naturally
Is what I long to hear
(Chorus)
It's in your eyes
And in your smile
In the passion of your kiss'
It's takin' me in your arms so easily
So easily
It's how you listen when I'm pourin' out my feeling
Baby when I feel the most from you
Is when you're not tryin' to
"Where You End And I Begin"
I guess I'm just one of those
WHo believes there has to be a reason
For living and breathing
Everytime you pull me close
Something tells me there'll be no

When You Are Not Surprised

When you are not surprised, not surprised,
nor leap in imagination from sunlight into shadow
or from shadow into sunlight
suiting the color of fright or delight
to the bewildering circumstance
when you are no longer surprised
by the quiet or fury of daybreak
the stormy uprush of the sun’s rage
over the edges of torn trees
torrents of living and dying flung
upward and outward inward and downward to space
or else
peace peace peace peace
the wood-thrush speaking his holy holy
far hidden in the forest of the mind
while slowly
the limbs of light unwind
and the world’s surface dreams again of night
as the center dreams of light
when you are not surprised
by breath and breath and breath
the first unconscious morning breath
the tap of the bird’s beak on the pane
and do not cry out come again
blest blest that you are come again
o light o sound o voice of bird o light
and memory too o memory blest
and curst with the debts of yesterday
that would not stay, or stay

when you are not surprised
by death and death and death
death of the bee in the daffodil
death of color in the child’s cheek
on the young mother’s breast
death of sense of touch of sight
death of delight
and the inward death the inward turning night
when the heart hardens itself with hate and indifference
for hated self and beloved not-self
when you are not surprised
by wheel’s turn or turn of season
the winged and orbed chariot tilt of time
the halcyon pause, the blue caesura of spring
and solar rhyme
woven into the divinely remembered nest
by the dark-eyed love in the oriole’s breast
and the tides of space that ring the heart
while still, while still, the wave of the invisible world
breaks into consciousness in the mind of god
then welcome death and be by death benignly welcomed
and join again in the ceaseless know-nothing
from which you awoke to the first surprise.

Don't Shout when You Wipe Out

To those misguided,
And surfing to ride...
On the crest of waves,
Behind those who champion...
The act as a challenge,
And not a followed task.
Don't shout when you wipe out!
Screaming for the attention you seek.

If the water is too deep...
And you wish to touch the sand,
By using your own abilities.
It will be your own feet,
Upon which you will eventually stand...
To explain why you surf,
When you are not yet deserving...
To qualify yourself as a champion!

When You are in love

when you are in love care it,
cause once in your lifetime you can find it.

when you are in love protect it from horrible storms,
because they may take it away beyond the hills.

when you are in love hold it and tenderly care it.
like a mother that cares for her child.
cause the love needs care to grow more and more every single day.

when you are in love hold it like a very valuable diamond in your hands.
and never let it slips among of your fingers.
cause love is the most valuable thing that we ever have.

when you are in love don't loose it fight forit.
cause the love is more precious then any wealth.
the life is so empty place when you are not in love.

Old Men.... (Doesnt Change)

old men find stars
in the blackest sky,
that young men never see.
see years in every moment,
and know to be silent.
they know the futility of wars,
and the bitterness of loss.
they know how to be lovers,
lost in every movement, every scent.
they know about tears and touching,
are familiar with the empty place
deep in your soul.
they know about freedom and failure,
hardness, softness, and death.
old men say thank you without speaking,
give more than they take.
old men listen,
even when you're not talking,
and hear what you dont know
that you're saying!
old men tell the truth,
forgive and are forgiven...
leave their footprints
in the sand.
laugh in the face of mortality,
are companions to small children,
and old dogs...
and when they love you
it doesnt change,
it just turns colors
with time and seasons!

My friend you talk about my people and me

My friend you talk
about my people and me
being equal
to Hitler and the Germans
of the Second World War,

but do not know
that I and most of us Afrikaners
treated black people
like human beings,

never lifted a hand
against one,
that I knew from being
a toddler that they were
Christians as well

when my mother
gave the money that was left
from my father’s funeral fund
for a church to be constructed
in their own community.

How I saw the effect
of the Church Street bomb
killing innocent civilians
on the street
men, women and children
from any race.

How I was forced
to go to the army
and to war
and patriotic did my duty there

to stop communists killing,
raping and robbing the future
like they did in East Germany,
Hungary in sixty-eight
and with the Portuguese
still living in Mozambique
and in Angola
when that countries
got their independence.

How in Soweto with the army
I had to stop black people
killing black people,
burning their fellow man alive
while their women were
cheering them on

and I saw man more being animals
than human beings
without having any mercy
for each other
having lost all conscience
for their cruel deeds.

You do not know
that I will not quarter
for a country
full of pirates

and not the Orlando
soccer playing type
but people who rob,
kill, maim and rape

that there’s no other escape
for Afrikaner people like me
and nowhere else to go

that I love this land
maybe more than
my forefathers did
who sacrificed
their lives for it

that my great grandfather Japie Strydom
lost his farm in the Cape colony
when as a Cape rebel
he joined the war
against the British,

was almost executed
when the war ended
was imprisoned on St. Helena,

that his wife
died in a British concentration camp
where she was fed finely grinded glass
in the flour given to her

that I want to get rid
of oppression against me
and my fellow Afrikaners
and want to have a life
like any one else.

When You Start To Talk About Nothing

the moment you start to talk about nothing
mind you, this nothing becomes something
and this something becomes something more
like a raindropp falling becoming a worm
the worm becoming a fish
the fish becoming a bird
the bird becoming a man

smaller ones taking bigger shapes
until it becomes a part of you
until it becomes you
until it becomes something bigger than you

all it takes is just a simple beginning
and you making meaning shaping bigger things
more than yourself
more than you can ever think of at the end

To Stand Before You And Talk About Being Just And Good

when you let me talk
i fear that i may not stop talking

after all
the topic is about an eternal quest
for what is good
and just

i get inside
an opening and then i start the
walk inside a labyrinth
and i feel like i am
a lost child
looking for an opening
again
sensing that perhaps there is
another light
beyond us

i sailed
and chanced upon an island
of uncertainty
and then i disembark from
there
only to find
that there is nobody there
except myself
talking

it is so strange
i see mountains and the world
is so silent

What 'Brothers' Do You Talk About?

What 'brothers' do you refer to?
Not the ones you annoyed, destroyed
And chased away?

Not the ones you avoided,
When the 'man' said that was okay?

Not the ones you babied and sent to stay,
Confined behind bars to learn about other crimes...
With chances that 'brother' would someday be gay.

What 'brothers' do you talk about?
That are not worthy of your support or praise.

Those 'brothers' are there and may sit on high horses.
But these 'brothers' you say betray.
Instead of seeing it their way.
With unsuccessful attempts to have them branded,
As weak with even temperments you can control.
And no 'brother' I know will allow that to happen...
Again!
Knowing what it is like having that to be done.

When I Talk To You

Remember me
Feels like forever
Since the days
When we were friends
I don't understand
All these changes
I'm still the same
No need to pretend

Where'd it go..?
Do you know..?
Maybe it just doesn't matter

'Cause when i try to talk to you
I feel like I'm not getting through you
Where did we go wrong
It's hard to be strong
When I talk...
When I talk to you

There were times
In the beginning
When you were there
When I needed you most
We'd sit and talk
About the future
And laugh about
Us getting old

Do you know
How it feels
I hope that you know that it matters

But when i try to talk to you
I feel like I'm not getting through you
Where did we go wrong
It's hard to be strong

When I talk to you
I want you to know everything that I am
Don't want to know what life would be without you

When i try to talk to you
I feel like I'm not getting through you
Where did we go wrong
It's hard to be strong
When I talk...
When I talk to you

You Like To Talk About War Heroes

You like to talk about war heroes I'll take you to meet one today
On warm days he sits on a park chair from here in distance a short walk away
In him you may feel disappointed he is frail and aged and gray
He has blocked out most of his war memories of war he has little to say.

He is not your idea of a hero but heroes they too do grow old
Just one more forgotten old warrior the years on him in wrinkles have told
He fought under the flag of his Nation in his Country he had great pride
A survivor of the war trenches where thousands of brave young men died.

He lives alone in a one bedroom apartment in a cold and drafty place to live in
Yet in his early twenties he was a decorated soldier and medals for his bravery he did win
For him it has all come to nothing and on the reaper's call he wait
On war memorial day he does not walk in the parade he feels no cause to celebrate.

You like to talk about war heroes you come for a short walk with me
And sitting on a park chair in the sunshine a war hero in the flesh you will see
Long before your father was born he fought in a war from here far away
He is the last of his battalion his war comrades amongst the dead lay

When You Meet a Man from Your Own Home Town

Sing, O Muse, in treble clef,
A little song of the A.E.F.,
And pardon me, please, if I give vent
To something akin to sentiment.
But we have our moments Over Here
When we want to cry and we want to cheer;
And the hurrah feeling will not down
When you meet a man from your own home town.

It's many a lonesome, longsome day
Since you embarked from the U.S.A.,
And you met some men--it's a great big war--
From towns that you never had known before;
And you landed here, and your rest camp mate
Was a man from some strange and distant state.
Liked him? Yes; but you wanted to see
A man from the town where you used to be.

And then you went, by design or chance,
All over the well-known map of France;
And you yearned with a yearn that grew and grew
To talk with a man from the burg you knew.
And some lugubrious morn when
Your morale is batting about .110,
"Where are you from?" and you make reply,
And the O.D. warrior says, "So am I."

The universe wears a smiling face
As you spill your talk of the old home place;
You talk of the streets, and the home town jokes,
And you find that you know each other's folks;
And you haven't any more woes at all
Ad you both decide that the world is small--
A statement adding to its renown
When you meet a man from your own home town.

You may be among the enlisted men,
You may be a Lieut. or a Major-Gen.;
Your home may be up in the Chilkoot Pass,
In Denver, Col., or in Pittsfield, Mass.;
You may have come from Chicago, Ill.,
Buffalo, Portland, or Louisville--
But there's nothing, I'm gambling, can keep you down,
When you meet a man from your own home town.

* * * * *

If you want to know why I wrote this pome,
Well . . . I've just had a talk with a guy from home.

When You Lie

when you lie i choose not to notice
i look at the surface of things
all your parts
become little things to me

your eyes roll like marbles avoiding
a one-on-one collision
with my eyes
your tongue roll on your cheek
like the creaking wheels of
the pushcart
your hands do the martial arts
kungfu, karate
or judo

you talk about curtains and veils
and drapes and long gowns

but still the skeleton on the closet
makes some rattling sound
escaping
like this snake that i cannot
even imagine

i do not stop you
keep on holding the pillars of your lies
tonight
Delilah, the other liar
of your equal caliber
shall cut your hair

When You're Sleeping

The sun came up
Desperate, desperate
The stars above
Held you back
Once again
Half way here
Half way here they whisper
You talk so much sense
When you're sleeping
When you're sleeping
And you share all the secrets
And the mystery
When you're sleeping
I saw your tears
Violet, violet
And it's been years
The sky's been crying for you
I found out
Beautiful things about you
You talked so much sense
When you're sleeping
When you're sleeping, yeah
And you share all your secrets
And the mystery
When you're sleeping
So you go and wonder
Where you wander
Lose yourself to take us higher
And I'll be waiting
For you when you're down
You talk so much sense
When you're sleeping
When you're sleeping, yeah
And you share all the secrets
And the mystery
When you're sleeping

I Want To Talk About You

Dont tell me about a night in june
Or a shady lane beneath the velvet moon
Dont tell me, cause I wanna talk about you.
Dont mention that waterfall
Or that shady nook where crickets softly call
Dont tell me, cause I wanna talk about you.
The moon and the stars, the objects on mars
Are things that weve talked of before
But your love for me was the question
Your answer throws back heavens door, so
Tell me, your love will be sincere,
Then my darling, you neednt ever fear
I love you and I wanna talk about you.
The moon and the stars, the objects on mars
Are things that weve talked of before
But your love for me was the question
Your answer throws back heavens door, so
Tell me, your love will be sincere,
Then my darling, you neednt ever fear
I love you and I wanna talk about you.

Hopefully When You've Been Released

This ax I wield,
Is not raised to attack you!
Those chains that keep you held in bondage...
I am doing my best,
To free them from you.

You've become attached,
And to them attracted.
I can not grow...
If you wont let your troubles go!
There is no bliss in this ignorance kept.
And I must confess,
This test leaves me unrested.

There will be a separation done.
Between those of true faith and walk it!
And those who fake faith,
And talk about it to convince.

And hopefully,
When you've been released...
A clarity will bring enlightenment,
With an increase of reality!
That is shared in an accepted harmony.

Be quiet.
I am already nervous about this.
I don't want to miss,
The aim of this mission I've been given.

'Me either!
But aren't your eyes suppose to be open? '

When You Think About Love

I smile to myself
as I read each poem
and each word and think
oh what wonder this brings
for loved ones and friends
the expression of love
is so rare to find
and to be able to put
them in words evermore
are a true sign of love
that will endure evermore

when you think about love
is it a sunbeam that reflects of the seas
or a star that bursts and shatters to earth
is it the time as it passes with each loving step
you share with your love now and evermore
is it his laughter his humor
that makes you feel warm inside
is it his talent of wonder
that makes you burst with pride
you smile and cry with laughter and joy
and know that he is yours evermore

my heart is his when he mended it back
together from pieces he found on the floor
with love and affection he brought back to life
my heart my soul my love evermore
he knows who he is my hero my friend
the man of my dreams
now and evermore

Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone

Please don't talk about me when I'm gone
Honey, though our friendship ceases from now on
And if you can't say anything uptight
It's better not to talk at all, is my advice
We're parting, you'll go your way, I'll go mine
I have just this to do
Give a little kiss and hope that it brings
Lots of love to you
Makes no difference how Jerry carries on (but I'll make it, baby!)
Please don't talk about me when I'm gone
Please don't talk about me, honey, when I'm gone
Though our friendship ceases from now on
And if you can't say anything real nice
You better not talk at all, is Jerry's advice
We're parting, you'll go your way, I'll go mine
I have just this to do
Here's a little kiss, I hope it brings
Lots and lots of love to you
Makes no difference how I carry on
Please don't talk about me
Please don't talk about me
Please don't talk about me
Please don't talk about me
Please don't talk about me
Please don't talk about me, honey
Please don't talk about me when I'm gone
