Rod Steiger

He got up and there were both of us in our underwear and this kid goes through the whole thing again, all the closets, the bathroom, everything else and then he left.

Underwear

I didn’t get much sleep last night
thinking about underwear
Have you ever stopped to consider
underwear in the abstract
When you really dig into it
some shocking problems are raised
Underwear is something we all have to deal with
Everyone wears
some kind of underwear
Even Indians wear underwear
Even Cubans
wear underwear
The Pope wears underwear I hope
The Governor of Louisiana wears underwear
I saw him on TV
He must have had tight underwear
He squirmed a lot
Underwear can really get you in a bind
You have seen the underwear ads for men and women
so alike but so different
Women’s underwear holds things up
Men’s underwear holds things down
Underwear is one thing
men and women do have in common
Underwear is all we have between us
You have seen the three-color pictures
with crotches encircled
to show the areas of extra strength
with three-way stretch
promising full freedom of action
Don’t be deceived
It’s all based on the two-party system
which doesn’t allow much freedom of choice
the way things are set up
America in its Underwear
struggles thru the night
Underwear controls everything in the end
Take foundation garments for instance
They are really fascist forms
of underground government
making people believe
something but the truth
telling you what you can of can’t do
Did you ever try to get around a girdle
Perhaps Non-Violent Action
is the only answer
Did Gandhi wear a girdle?
Did Lady Macbeth wear a girdle?
Was that why Macbeth murdered sleep?

Hard Rock Kid

(tom lang/additional lyrics by myles goodwyn & mike stone)
Published by goody two tunes, inc./additional publishers - bmi
The boy inside the man, looks hard into the night
The neighborhood cant get to sleep
The stereo is playing something hard and fast
The boy is tough, he plays for keeps
No ones gonna tell him hes too wild
Everybody knows hes a problem child
Hes a hard rock, hes a hard rock, hes a hard rock kid (kid)
Its a hard time, its a fine line, for a hard rock kid
Hes a hard rock, hes a hard rock, hes a hard rock kid (kid)
Leave him alone, hes in a hard rock zone
In the shadows, theres a heart thats beating strong
And through the night, he feels the heat
Hes like a stranger as he dances on the stage
Hes made a promise that he cant keep
But no ones gonna tell the boy hes wild
Everybody knows hes a hungry child
Hes a hard rock, hes a hard rock, hes a hard rock kid (kid)
Its a fine line, its a hard time, for a hard rock kid
Hes a hard rock, hes a hard rock, hes a hard rock kid (kid)
Leave him alone, hes in a hard rock zone
She watches as he turns, pretending not to care
And yet she knows the way he feels
The need for love so strong, together they can win
For now the musics all thats real
But no ones gonna tell the boy hes wild
Everybody knows hes a problem child
Hes a hard rock, hes a hard rock, hes a hard rock kid (kid)
Its a hard time, its a fine line, for a hard rock kid
Hes a hard rock, hes a hard rock, hes a hard rock kid (kid)
Leave him alone, hes in a hard rock zone
Hes a hard rock, hes a hard rock, hes a hard rock kid (kid)
Its a hard time, its a fine line, for a hard rock kid

Don't look sexy but it just feels right
Not too dirty and it's not too tight
Why I never threw it out, I'll never know exactly why
Keep it in the drawer beside my bed
It's faded pink now, but it used to be red
Starting to fray at the seams, but I know that you'll still love me
Like you did, like you did
Like before, like before
Like we will, like we will
Be doin' it once more
Oh baby know what your like?
You're like my favorite underwear
It just feels right, you know it
Oh baby know how you feel?
You feel like my favorite underwear
And I'm slipping you on again tonight
Leave you lyin' on the bedroom floor
I leave you hangin' on the bathroom door
Take you for granted, but I'll always know exactly where you are
Lost you once you were hard to find
Got you back you didn't live like mine
Thought we were falling apart but you make me feel so pretty
Like you did, like you did
Like before, like before
Like we will, like we will
Be doin' it once more
Oh baby know what your like?
You're like my favorite underwear
It just feels right, you know it
Oh baby know how you feel?
You feel like my favorite underwear
And I'm slipping you on again tonight
Slipping you on again tonight
Wrap me and roll me, hold me tight
Tear me apart and make me new
Like you always do
Oh baby know what your like?
You're like my favorite underwear
It just feels right, you know it
You feel you're like this is what I want
You feel, you feel
Oh baby know what your like?
You're like my favorite underwear
It just feels right, you know it
You feel you're like this is what I want
You feel, you feel
Slipping you on again tonight

Kid Things

What's there that makes you want to be lonely
What's there to keep you sitting at home
He'd always say no no no as if he wanted you to be hungry
well the same things you're missing
could get you into something else
Better leave when to stay is only
nothing but being alone
what I wanted you to know
is Kid things
seemed like nothing at all
kid things
make it better than it was
Kid things
seemed like nothing at all
but kid things
make it better than it was
hey what you got that makes you want to be lonely
hey what you got that makes it a better way to be
she said No no no i can't get any love and it's a sunday.
I said oh yeah what makes you think I wanted it that way.
cause one or two more smiles from you and
i don't need anything else.
what I wanted you to know
is kid things
seemed like nothing at all
kid things
make it better than it was
we're just kids
we spend all night on the phone
it's a kid thing
but i sleep better when i'm not alone
what i want right now
is just some more
gimme more..
Hey what you think
is you're not getting any younger
What i know is that you're not really very old
i know you wanna say No no no
it feels much better in the summer
well if it isn't warm where you're sittin'
then kitten come on in out of the cold
Cause all I know is when I'm with you
well I don't need anything else.
what I wanted you to know
is Kid things
seemed like nothing at all
and kid things
make it better than it was
We're just kids...
we spend all night on the phone

Toast Of The Town

Hey, hey, hey
Hey kid, the whole house is shakin
We got the time, right in our sights
Hey, hey, hey
Hey kid, the worlds gone crazy but you know
It wont last too long
You know it wont last too long
You know it wont last too long
You know it wont last too long
Hey kid, youre the toast of the town
Well hey kid, youre the toast of the town
Hey, hey, hey
Hey kid, whats it gonna get ya
Screaming through the hours of the night
Hey kid, the worlds gone crazy
But you know it wont last too long
You know it wont last too long
You know it wont last too long
You know it wont last too long
Hey kid, youre the toast of the town
Well hey kid, youre the toast of the town
You heard me sayin baby dont be a fool
I got news for you
Well pack your things baby, dont be a fool
Before it crashes down on you
Down on you
Down on you
Down on you
(guitar solo)
Come on
Well hey kid, youre the toast of the town
Well hey kid, youre the toast of the town
Well hey kid, youre the toast of the town

The Big Kid and the Tall Tale

The big kid stood
by the garden shed
with others kids and you
the horticultural teacher

was down by the beds
with some other kids
whom he was showing
how to dig

and the big kid said
I had her
back there
up in those woods

at the end
of the playing field
the other kids
moved in closer

to get a better grip
on the tale told
you stood on
the perimeter

of the crowd
one eye
on the big kid
the other on the teacher

bent over a kid
showing him how
to hold a spade
and you know what?

the big kid said
she was some goer
the other kids
looked at him

then at each other
some plump kid
with spots laughed
you looked over

towards the woods
by the playing field
a quaint woodland
over by the fence

The little Kid

The little kid
Unaware of the social rules
Does whatever he likes
For him nothing is a rise and nothing is a fall
He does all
- The little kid -

Has an open mind
Lives with the rules of his own kind
Whenever he needs help
Does not ask but demand
If request does not work then with command
- The little kid -

Eating and sleeping are his foes
Mama and Papa are the friends of his foes
Papa diverts his mind
Mama makes him feed
Eating or sleeping is over
He forgives the mother and the father
- The little kid -

He gets up in the morning
Says to all 'good morning'
Looks at the toys that Mama cares and he plays
Looks at the shelves that Mama arranges
Remembers they were spread all over the floor last night
Brings back to the same orientation without wasting a minute
- The little Kid -

Its time for his play school
Mama struggles to get him ready
School dresses are bad
Forced dress up is sad
Somehow puts on the school shoes
Gets ready and goes
- The little Kid -

Comes back from school
Holds his toy gun and doll
Mama wants him to eat
Mama's success comes after a fight
- The little Kid -

Little away the little kid
All are concerned
All are bored
Struggle and fight gives happiness
Away the kid proves
- Thats the power of The little Kid -

There's A New Kid In Town

duet with Keith Whitley
(Don Cook/Curly Putman/Keith Whitley)
We're looking for The King
The new Messiah
We're following the star
Shining brighter
Old man won't you help us if you can
He shook his head
But he pointed his hand
There's a new kid in town
And he's lying in a manger down the road
There's a new kid in town
But he's just another baby I suppose
Heaven knows
There's a new kid in town
Here in Bethlehem
I see you've traveled far
Bearing treasures
You say these gifts are for
The new Kings pleasures
Well I've heard
That a King might come
But up 'til now there hasn't been one
There's a new kid in town
And he's lying in a manger down the road
There's a new kid in town
But he's just another baby I suppose
Heaven knows
There's a new kid in town
Here in Bethlehem
There's a new kid in town
And he's lying in a manger down the road
There's a new kid in town
But he's just another baby I suppose
Heaven knows
There's a new kid in town
Here in Bethlehem

Give The Kid A Break

Don't know why I'm down here
Must be something I said
Or some small imperfection
In my soul or in my head
Don't know why I'm down here
Don't reserve to roast or bake
I'm fighting off slanderous allegations
Why don't you give the kid a break?
You don't think maybe we could talk this over
You're a reasonable man
Could we discuss my grave situation
I'm a miserable man
And I'm in the frying pan
Give the kid a break
Give me one good reason why I should
All right, all right, so I made a few mistakes
But for heaven's sake
Watch your language, Kid.
OK, OK, don't get hot
Don't question my judgement
He only reaped what he sowed
He cast his pearls before swine
And that's good enough for me
I don't want to talk it over
Even tho' I'm a reasonable man
Sonny, from over here
Looks like you're in no position to bargain
You're a convicted man
You're right in the frying pan
Give the kid a break
Please give me a break
Give the kid a break
Nah nah, I don't think so, man
Come on, you know I got what it takes
Can't you give me a break?
Sure thing kid, when hell freezes over
Ok, don't give the kid a break
Hey you guys, I thought you were on my side
No they don't
Give the kid a break
Yeah, well thanks a lot, pals
Listen boss, maybe we can make a little deal
Isn't there anything I can say
Or some kind of fine I can pay
Something
Don't know why I'm down here
Must be something I said (I'm sorry)
Or some small imperfection
In my soul or in my head
It might be some infection

Heres Lookin At You Kid

(myles goodwyn)
Published by mfg sing sing music/socan - ascap
The kid in the valleys got an attitude
Lean and mean, with nothin to lose
He aint uptight, he dont care no more
The girls start screamin as he hits the floor
The time is now, while the night is young
Youre on the road, wanting to run
You got to stop boy, it aint just talk, no way
So turn up the heat, and let it rock
Heres lookin at you, heres lookin at you kid
Heres lookin at you, heres lookin at you kid
Look at me, I got my dancin shoes
Theres lots of women, which one do I choose
Ill place a wager, with a ten dollar bill
If the blond dont get me, then the brunette will
Heres lookin at you, heres lookin at you kid
Heres lookin at you, heres lookin at you kid, alright
Better not tell me that Im unkind
But I dont wanna hear whats on your mind, no way
I dont need trouble, that was yesterday
I came to party, I came to play, yeah
So heres lookin at you, heres lookin at you kid
Heres lookin at you, heres lookin at you kid
Heres lookin at you (heres lookin at you), heres lookin at you kid

Kid Fears

Pain from pearls -hey little girl
How much have you grown
Pain from pearls - hey little girl
Flower for the ones youve known
Are you on fire
From the years
What would you give
For your kid fears
Secret staircase, running high
You had a hiding place
Secret staircase, running low
But they all know, now youre inside
Are you on fire
From the years
What would you give
For your kid fears
Your kid fears
Skipping stones, we know the price now
And any sin will do
How much further, if you can spin
How much further, if you are smooth
Are you on fire
[are you on fire]
From the years
[from the years? ]
What would you give
For your kid fears
[what would you give]
[what would replace the rent with the stars above]
(replace the rent with the stars above)
[replace the need with love]
(replace the need with love)
[replace the anger with the tide]
(replace the anger with the tide)
[replace the ones, the ones, the ones, that you love]
(replace the ones, the ones, the ones, that you love)
Ah the ones that you love
Are you on fire
(replace the rent with the stars above)
[are you on fire]
From all the years
(replace the need with love)
[from the years]
What would you give
(replace the anger with the tide)
[what would you give]
For your kid fears
(for the ones that you love)

The Priest They Called Him

fight tuberculosis, folks. christmas eve, an old
Junkie selling christmas seals on north park street.
The priest, they called him. fight tuberculosis, folks.
People hurried by, gray shadows on a distant wall.
It was getting late and no money to score.
He turned into a side street and the lake wind hit him like a knife.
Cab stop just ahead under a streetlight.
Boy got out with a suitcase. thin kid in prep school clothes,
Familiar face, the priest told himself, watching from the doorway.
remindsme of something a long time ago. the boy, there, with his overcoat
Unbuttoned, reaching into his pants pocket for the cab fare.
The cab drove away and turned the corner. the boy went inside
A building. hmm, yes, maybe - the suitcase was there in the doorway.
The boy nowhere in sight. gone to get the keys, most likely,
Have to move fast. he picked up the suitcase and started for the corner.
Made it. glanced down at the case. it didnt look like the case the boy had,
Or any boy would have. the priest couldnt put his finger on what was so
Old about the case. old and dirty, poor quality leather, and heavy.
Better see whats inside. he turned into lincoln park, found an
Empty place and opened the case. two severed human legs that belonged to
A young man with dark skin. shiny black leg hairs glittered in the
Dim streetlight. the legs had been forced into the case and he had to use
His knee on the back of the case to shove them out. legs, yet,
He said, and walked quickly away with the case.
Might bring a few dollars to score. the buyer sniffed suspiciously.
kind of a funny smell about it. its just mexican leather.
well, some joker didnt cure it.
The buyer looked at the case with cold disfavor.
not even right sure he killed it, whatever it is.
Three is the best I can do and it hurts. but since this is christmas
And youre the priest... he slipped three bills under the table into the
Priests dirty hand. the priest faded into the street shadows, seedy
And furtive. three cents didnt buy a bag, nothing less than a nickel.
Say, remember that old addie croaker told me not to come back unless
I paid him the three cents I owe him. yeah, isnt that a fruit for ya,
Blow your stack about three lousy cents.
The doctor was not pleased to see him.
now, what do you want? I told you!
The priest laid three bills on the table. the doctor put the
Money in his pocket and started to scream.
Ive had troubles! people have been around!
I may lose my license! the priest just sat there, eyes, old and heavy with
Years of junk, on the doctors face.
i cant write you a prescription. the doctor jerked open a drawer
And slid an ampule across the table. thats all I have in the office!
The doctor stood up. take it and get out! he screamed, hysterical.
The priests expression did not change.
The doctor added in quieter tones, after all, Im a professional man,
And I shouldnt be bothered by people like you.
is that all you have for me? one lousy quarter g? couldnt you lend

Part 3 of Trout Fishing in America

SEA, SEA RIDER

The man who owned the bookstore was not magic. He was not a

three-legged crow on the dandelion side of the mountain.

He was, of course, a Jew, a retired merchant seaman

who had been torpedoed in the North Atlantic and floated

there day after day until death did not want him. He had a

young wife, a heart attack, a Volkswagen and a home in

Marin County. He liked the works of George Orwell, Richard

Aldington and Edmund Wilson.

He learned about life at sixteen, first from Dostoevsky

and then from the whores of New Orleans.

The bookstore was a parking lot for used graveyards.

Thousands of graveyards were parked in rows like cars.

Most of the kooks were out of print, and no one wanted to

read them any more and the people who had read the books

had died or forgotten about them, but through the organic

process of music the books had become virgins again. They

wore their ancient copyrights like new maidenheads.

I went to the bookstore in the afternoons after I got off

work, during that terrible year of 1959.

He had a kitchen in the back of the store and he brewed

cups of thick Turkish coffee in a copper pan. I drank coffee

and read old books and waited for the year to end. He had a

small room above the kitchen.

It looked down on the bookstore and had Chinese screens

March of Memories

Left, right - left, right . . .
We march today for memories (the grizzled Digger said)
Memories of lost dreams and comrades gone ahead
Comrades bloody war took, dreams that men have slain
(Left, right - left, right . . .) Not ours to dream again.
There was Shorty Hall and Len Pratt, Long Joe and Blue,
Skeet and Brolga Houlihan, and Fat and me and you:
Bright lads, the old bunch; eager lads and keen
That first day we marched down thro' this familiar scene.
Dreams were ours, and high hopes went with us overseas.
(Left, right - left, right . . . ) And now 'tis memories.

We march again for memories (the grizzled Digger sighed)
Memories of lost mates, of foolish hopes that died.
First, Shorty got his issue on the beach at Sari Bair.
(Left, right - left, right . . .) The vision of him there
Brought the dawn of disillusion. I needed little more
To blood me to the butchery, the filthiness called war.
Shorty, like a limp rag, slung there anyhow,
Sprawling on the warm sand like I can see him now.
Always was a merry mate, a rare lad for fun.
(Left, right - left, right . . .) And Shorty, that was one.

We march today for memories; and they come crowding fast
As each year adds another page to the story of the past.
Pratt went west at Mena Base; raved of home and peace.
(Left, right - left, right . . . ) His was a kind release.
For a Lone Pine shell-burst got him; and he was less than man.
'Twas a sniper's bullet bore the name of Brolga Houlihan.
We called him Happy Houlihan, the man who took a chance.
Then the Reaper paused and plotted for the rest of them in France -
Except Long Joe, the luckless, a youth ill-shaped for war.
(Left, right - left, right . . .) And Long Joe was four.

We march today for memories. Little else had we
When we marched home as veterans. Blue and you and me.
For Skeet went with a night raid, and none came back alive.
(Left, right - left, right . . .) So Skeet, he tallied five.
Five gone and four to fight; us and Blue and Fat,
Who vowed he was too big to hit; but a whizz-bang settled that.
Yet Fat was lucky to the end - an end that held no pain.
All hell erupted where he stood; and none saw him again.
And Blue marched, and you marched, and I, a war-torn three.
(Left. right - left, right . . . ) Marched with memory.

We march again with memories (the grizzled Digger spake)
One year? Ten years? How soon shall we awake
To glorious reality? For lately it would seem -
(Left, right - left, right . . .) - we march within a dream.
Where Shorty is, and Blue is, and Happy Houlihan,

The Hole in the Bathroom Wall

The cottage was old, it needed some work
The walls were of crumbling stone,
The windows, like eyes in a tumbledown Kirk
Were staring, like sockets of bone;
I hadn't much money, I hadn't much choice,
'I'll take it, ' I said to the man,
If only I'd known what the future would bring
I would never have shaken his hand.

My marriage had failed, I had my young son
Just three and a half in the spring,
We bought an old bed and a table, two chairs,
Drove up there and went to move in;
The floorboards were creaky, the walls were damp,
The place was as filthy as hell,
I sat the young lad on the floor by a lamp
And I cleaned, until darkness fell.

The rooms were all empty, they echoed and stirred,
I thought I heard whispers and moans,
The ghosts of the past tried to warn me, I guess,
I couldn't interpret their groans;
I tucked up the lad after dinner, in bed,
And I wandered the house overall,
Then checked out the water, and turning my head
Saw a hole in the bathroom wall.

It wasn't that big, but was over the bath,
I could see through the damp and the rot,
It wouldn't take that much to fill it, I thought,
Then I took a long walk, and forgot;
For days I was painting, cementing and fixing
The cracks were all over the place,
But never a thought of that hole in the wall -
To my ultimate shame, and disgrace.

Outside the cottage, a paddock ran back,
All burnt up and brown in the sun,
There wasn't a leaf or a stick that was green
The summer had barely begun;
Old pieces of iron lay thick on the ground
And lizards lay under their shade,
I should have been warned, but it just didn’t dawn
On me then, to my utter dismay.

A month had gone by, the weather was dry,
So hot that we suffered like hell,
I drew a warm bath, only tepid and low
So the lad could cool off for a spell,
I reached for a towel, but nothing was there,

The Kid Inside

There's a kid inside
And I have him with me always
There's a kid inside
Walking down old high school hallways
There's a kid inside
At a desk, at a dance, in the halls,in the showers
There's a kid inside
To this very day
And he makes a try for that high pop fly
That I fumble one september
And he makes a fuss
Over some A plus
That I shouldn't still remember
And he goes along
Getting hurt, getting mad, fighting fights that are over
And unless I'm strong
All my senses are carried away
I could fell my hand
My tremblin hand
On the shelf angora sweather
I can hear my band
That awful band, only now it sounds much better
I can see the kid
The kid I use to be
On the stage,on the field,on the lunch line
I can feel him tugging at me
Every time I think I don't care I blink
And he's there again
He's there again
Fighting ancient wrongs
Humming old hit songs in my head
Singing come along,come along
Come along for the ride
To a time and place
I could not forget if I tried
And I never know when the breeze'll blow
With a rush of old sensation
Why the kid should wake
And my heart should ache
Everytime I smell carnations
Something rings the bell
Any thing at all
All it takes is a slam of a locker
Of the switch from summer or fall
A change in season
Seems better than reason
But there he goes
He's there again
Fighting ancient wrong
Humming old hit songs in my head

Clean-cut Kid

Everybodys asking why he couldnt adjust
Adjust to what, a dream that bust?
They took a clean-cut kid
And they made a killer out of him
Thats what they did
They said whats up is down, they said what isnt is
They put ideas in his head that he thought were his
They took a clean-cut kid
But they made a killer out him
Thats what they did
He was on the baseball team, he was in the marching band
When he was ten years old he had a watermelon stand
He was a clean-cut kid
And they made a killer out of him
Thats what they did
He went to church on sunday, he was a boy scout
For his friends he would turn his pockets inside out
He was a clean-cut kid
But they made a killer out him
Thats what they did
They said, listen boy, youre just a pup
They sent to a napalm health spa to shape up
They gave him dope to smoke, drinks and pills,
A jeep to drive, blood to spill
They said congratulations you got what it takes.
They sent him back into the rat-race without any brakes
They took a clean-cut kid
And they made a killer out him
Thats what they did
He bought the american dream but it put him in debt
Only game he could play was russian roulette
He drank coca-cola, he was eating wonder bread
He ate burger kings, he was well fed
He went to hollywood to see peter otoole
He stole a rolls royce and drove it in a swimming pool
They took a clean-cut kid
But they made a killer out of him
Thats what they did
He couldve sold insurance, owned a restaurant or a bar
He couldve been an accountant or a tennis star
He was wearing boxing gloves, he took a dive one day
Off the golden gate bridge into china bay
His mama walks the floor, his dadddy weeps and moans
They gotta sleep together in a home they dont own
They took a clean-cut kid
And made a killer out of him
Thats what they did
Everybodys asking why he didnt adjust
All he ever wanted was someone he could trust
They took his head and turned it inside out
