Very early in the morning we were woken from our sleep,
We were going on safari, being driven in a jeep,

We had to dress quite quickly, and we went out in a rush,
And after we'd been driving through miles and miles of bush
For an hour or two (I have to say forgive the way I speak) ,
But - the roads were very bumpy - I was dying for a leak.
The driver stopped the jeep and kindly offered us a drink,
But it might have been more kind if he had only paused to think;
We had seen a herd of elephants, some vultures in the sky,
Several wildebeest and zebra, a hyena passing by,
Giraffes, a pair of ostriches, a buffalo or two,
And we'd taken lots of photographs (well, that's what tourists do) :
We had even seen some lions lazing underneath a tree,
But... we hadn't seen a toilet... and I really had to pee.
Beside a water-hole at last we found a pair of loos,
And I hurried to the gents', 'cause that's the one I have to use.
Yes, I went up to the gentlemen's, and pushed the door ajar,
But I didn't push it hard, and it didn't open far.
There was something in the way, you see. I did a double-take,
For it looked just like a tail, the last six inches of a snake.
I decided not to panic - I'm not that sort of bloke,
And it could have been a rubber one, left there for a joke -
So I pushed the door wide open, to be sure of no mistake,

Scrutiny Of A Psyche

Never a hallucination did she never fear
Snake gourd like a snake didn't delusively appear
Yet all changed smacking her heart to drear
One day with a basket by a snake charmer

Came on the charmer to capture with glee
Embedded her boldness drove him to flee
Devotee of snake-God she on a spree
Eerieless so her heart was cheery

Around the house garden a dense forest
But seldom a treat such so left
Can enter in no foreign body
Permission granted only to known somebody

Appeared a week later snake- charmer
Simply played his magudi the snake catcher
Grew her nerves anguished in temper
Controlled herself but with all prayer

On and on went the magudi
Bushy hiss, a snake up on eerily
Asked her piety to let it flee free
But lo, caught and thrushed into his bag gunny

Disobeyed he, hence obliged not she
Nothing of his money paid she
His turn, released the reptile angrily
All the world's curses throwing on her badly

Sleepless nights thence haunted her gravely
All the charmer's curses gunning fiery
And her psyche accounted the destiny
Bad to worse to the worst of scrutiny

Ofcourse life writhes, squirms and wriggles
Serpentinely venomous at times
Spreading its hood trouble- flickering
From its satanic fang sufferings outflowing

Althrough trustworthy her serpent God
Sudden susceptibility yet in sunken heart broad
In the grip of a comminating serpent
Bewildered life in mirthless thought

Her guts unnerved why?
Recessed her devotional ply?
Who the serpent, charmer or the reptile?
Or the Lord Himself for a while?

Motherhood, 1951

Dear Saint Patrick, this is Peggy,
Or maybe it's Pegeen to you,
Well, I'm really Stella Mae.
Peggy's my nickname,
But anyway, will you please tell me
What to do about the rattlesnake
That's in my room?
I know it's there,
But I can't find it anywhere I search.
I've ransacked the closet more than once,
Because that's where we found the skin it shed.
I even put the cat in there and shut the door,
But he only went to sleep on my new dress
Which he had clawed from a hanger.
My grandma, Maggie, says you drove the snakes from Ireland
And they came here to Arizona.
She's right, you know
For didn't a rattler kill our cat, Blackie?
There he was beside the porch, stiff as a board
And baby Florence saw it.
She's only three and doesn't need to see death like that, not yet.
If you can, let her believe for now
That we will live forever.
Anyhow, I'm pregnant again.
I know I've sinned
But I am paying for it.
Don't make my girl suffer
Because her mother used poor judgment
And got herself in trouble out of wedlock.
My mother's disappointed in me.
My father doesn't care
And says I don't have to marry
Just to have a name for this one in the oven.
Father says there's nothing wrong with our name
And will serve the babe as well as any other,
But mother is determined to give this one a legal father
Like Baby Florence has, but only on paper.
She doesn't have a father either,
But she's got her granddad, he says
And goes to work. He is a barber.
Mother is a cook and she works longer hours,
So I'm here with Baby Florence
And that infernal snake all day.
Outside, the new cat, dogs, chickens and hogs
Roam about the yard,
But they can't help me, can they?
I keep praying, but you don't answer.
I guess you've got no time for me,
So armed with a shovel,
I go in the closet once again

Snake

I am a snake-
Some call me a venomous rattler.
Seething with anguish,
I slither in the sand.

There is no water in this tepid desert.
I foresee no oasis.
There is no liquid to quench
My insatiable thirst.
A mirage has become a liar to me.

I am a venomous rattling snake.
I squirm beneath the torridity of
This desert’s noon sun.

Fearful of all who encounter me,
I am a frightening source to others.

I am a snake – terrified, and defensive.
I lash out to all who approach me.

I am a rattler, who dwells in the Kalahari,
Amongst the natives known as
The” no kneed Bushmen”-who pay games of
Catch with the rising and the setting sun.

Hunted down,
A poisonous arrow spears me.
Slithering more and more slowly within the brush,
I know that I am on the descent towards hell.

My heart weakens, and ceases to beat.
As life slowly escapes me,
My spirit evades me,
As I writhe in emotional agony.
