Satiety

Macaroons and frosted cupcakes blush
under the shining-eyed approval
of the child in the shirred sundress.
The breath of the waiting queue is hushed
by a tension-melting spectacle,
as she is swept off her tip-toes
by the debonair gingerbread men.

The relieved mother nods, smiling.
This should be the denouement:
The patisserie assistant slips
the treat into a white paper bag
and a prompt conclusion allows
bemused onlookers to share a brief
afterglow of benevolence.

Except that, the patisserie
assistant is dallying
and the child is spellbound by
a new wave of possibilities.
The little golden men display
a spectrum of white iced expressions
and carnival coloured buttons.

The child's pointing finger hovers;
she is fulfilled by the moment.
The patisserie assistant kneels
beside the glass cabinet
where the men live at child-eye level.
She is complicit and condoning.
She drops below the adult plane.

Above them, the customers simmer.
The shapes and colours of sugar
are important to a child;
the piquancy of ginger less so.
A choice! -pink, blue, green buttons,
uncertain brow and a squiggled mouth.
The gingerbread man looks offended.

The next customers, finally served,
are understandably rankled.
The patisserie assistant
owes them at least forty-five seconds.
Their faces are cool. An echo
of the gingerbread man's mute rebuke
is resounding in their fluent eyes.

Later, she wraps the white plastic tray
of remaining men in clear plastic.

A accountant at a transport company

Figures on paper glare at me
with the sun hanging bright in a blue sky,
while busses and lories drive past the whole time.

Outside vehicles are parked in rows and shine
and drivers walk about talking
where we are camped in, behind rusting wire and zinc.

When the managing director looks in he wants
me to make changes, to do an act of fraud.
Figures on paper glare at me

with a bonus waving,
and my name, my integrity is at stake
and drivers walk about talking

and I wonder how to get out of this trap
when I catch the eye of the managing director’s charming daughter
while busses and lories drive past the whole time.

I again check calculations, re-determine and add
and I keep things correct
and my name, my integrity is at stake.

The managing director wants the final figures,
he makes threats and his temper is just under control.
Figures on paper glare at me

while I complete the financial statements
and thousands of things go through my mind
and I keep things correct

and the day rushes past
the managing director’s daughter winks at me, walks down the passage
while busses and lories drive past the whole time,

sirens are ringing in the distance and the wall-clock ticks off the last minutes
and I know that I can loose my job
and thousands of things go through my mind

when the girl walks in with eyes cutting into my soul,
say that her dad is waiting and I feel like caught in web.

and I hear excited voices in the managing director’s office.

Parafake: The 'Word'.....[English language; 'new' word]

My wife used the "word" parafake, one evening in our bed.
Now don't get any nasty idea she was speaking of ME, in your nasty head.
In fact I don't believe either of us recall, of WHAT she was speaking,
and "parafake" isn't even a word in my dictionary. I know; I went peeking.

There is paraffin and paraformaldehyde, and parakeet of course,
but I could not find parafake; nor was there parahorse.
So I looked up "para", which turns out to be some sort of money.
Then I looked up the prefix "para- (or par-) ", with no definitions that were funny.
The prefix definitions range from "beside" and "beyond", to "incorrect",
to "a diatomic molecule" which, without super-eyes, I could NOT detect.
Well there was one definition of para-, the prefix, which I thought would fit.
"Para" can mean "assistant" (such as in paralegal) . On that definition I bit.

So then I looked up "fake" in my dictionary to try to pin down "parafake".
Guess what. There are widely varying definitions of "fake", for goodness sake!
Well I've chosen the definition of fake which is "one that is not genuine".
Therefore I say a "parafake" is an "assistant to one that is not genuine". If you don't agree, that is fine.
So a paralegal would be a parafake if her boss had no law degree, and
a vintner's assistant would be a parafake if his boss neither made NOR sold wine. You SEE?

Courage is setting yourself free

As she maneuvered
her entourage
of a motorized wheelchair
trained assistance dog
and personal assistant
into the Olympic size swimming pool
at the health club

I thought that it was
a nice idea
to come and sit
at the edge of the pool
and that it would probably
be therapeutic
or at least a refreshing
change of place
for someone in a wheelchair

but she scooted her vehicle
into front of the first swim lane
and as she was chatting to her assistant
the dog just sat there by the door
resting

her assistant reached behind her and
lifted her torso up and placed
her at the edge of the pool

as I was sitting in the
nearby whirlpool
at 4: 30 in the afternoon
I became curious
about what they were going to do next?
was the parapaligic
going to just go in the water
and sit or was there something more in store

when she was tossed in the water
I realized she must have been a swimmer before
you could tell by her upper body
that she had once had a sleek form
that swimmers have
powerful shoulder muscles

she started with a back stroke
her thick arms making a V stroke
her clenched fists
providing an engine to paddle her body
down the lane
since she had no control over her legs

Raccoons

In my spare time I’ve become a trapper
Raccoons are ruining my roof
(Gnawing through the tarpaper.)
They made a hole just the right fit
So big a neighbor’s cat climbed through it

I borrowed a trap from a neighbor, soon
And trapped three raccoons
A possum, a cat
And a rat

My assistant had a tie pin made out of a raccoon’s penis bone
It’s the only animal that has an appendage like stone
So in jest, I promised a raccoon to my assistant
For a birthday present

A stuffed raccoon I placed in the trap
And took it to lunch without mishap
You should have seen his face
When I walked through the door of the dining place

The cage held at arm’s length for safety it’s supposed
And the animal crouched as if escape intended
After the joke unfolded
And my assistant, properly befuddled
Got a new tie clasp

The Art Of Life

If anyone believes,
The one standing alone...
Taking the heat under spotlight,
Runs the show...
Hasn't met the director or the producer,
The manager, assistant manager.
The script writer, agent, publicist...
And a host of others behind the scenes.

If anyone believes,
The one standing alone...
Taking the heat under spotlight,
Runs the show...
Doesn't know theater.
Or who calls the shots,
To enable any light to shine
And be spotted anywhere.

Theater is staged.
No matter whose name is on the marquee,
To sell the tickets.
Theater is staged.
And the best acts are trained to fill the seats.
If one knew theater,
One would know the art of life.

And the importance of having not only a good director...
But one with the bucks,
Who can keep the production afloat long enough to seduce...
Is the key to selling an audience sold on what they see,
Until the curtain drops to signal the end of the performance.

Taken from its natural habitat to be staged,
The art of life...
Is only theater to delude and to captivate believers.

(Humility Poem) A Nobody

I am nobody.
I keep telling you this.
Why won't you just listen?
I have no importance.
I have made no great discoveries.

Just trust me.
Let someone else make a stand and lead.
Captain please get me my steed.
A horse of a mighty fine breed indeed.
Fast as she can go we're off to to save the world to be.

I think the director is becoming more important. To work under rushed conditions, you need to have an extremely professional director. If the director's good than the end result will be good.

It all has to do with the director, the captain of the ship. He sets the pace, the mood. If the director is quiet, the set is quiet. If the director is loud, then everybody has to be louder to be heard.

Mel is a great director because he's not just a director, he's an actor, so he knows how to direct actors. I loved working with him. He's great as a director. He's so intelligent. He's generous. I really loved him.

Beauty And Doubt

Beauty should be cause of doubt,
remaining as a paradox
within a fog that, with lights-out,
become its combination locks
which only should be opened for
the people that it may deceive
and all its images adore,
since they’re unable to believe
that lying very far beyond
the beauty that they worship lie
not icons of which they are fond
but feelings hidden from the eye,
felt only by the loving heart
that longs for union of the mind
with images that works of art
cannot portray till eyes are blind.
The image is to history
what certainty must be to doubt,
solution of a mystery
that true love can do well without.

Michael Kimmelman (“Unravelling a 15th-Century Whodunit, ” NYT, December 11,2008) writes about three images attributed to the Master of Flémaille, St. Veronica, Madonna and Child and Gnadenstuhl:
Here at the Städel Museum “The Master of Flémalle and Rogier van der Weyden” is an old-fashioned whodunit. Almost exhaustingly erudite, it mixes up very great Netherlandish paintings of the 15th century with a few not so great ones to unravel perennial questions from galaxy academe about which artist painted what. Why should we care? For the same reason film buffs debate if Howard Hawks was the real director behind “The Thing From Another World, ” the sci-fi classic from 1951 he produced, rather than Christian Nyby, the credited director, or whether the 1943 thriller “Journey Into Fear, ” for which Norman Foster is listed as director, was taken over by Orson Welles, who played a Turkish police detective in it and whose other movies it partly resembles.We should care because, commerce and the usual scholarly nitpicking aside, the debate is itself an excuse for looking closer, and because piecing together any great artist’s legacy is a bit like composing a novel, every chapter part of the artist’s grand narrative, without all of which the story is incomplete. And, well, also because good mysteries beg to be solved…. And yet. Some things are clear. The weary, aged face of Veronica looks deeply, memorably human. The young woman from Berlin is heartbreakingly beautiful. Elsewhere, a painting of a stout man who at first looks identical to a second portrait is built up from layers of paint that subtly absorb light and give weight and density to the face. Max J. Friedländer, the eminent historian, many years ago attributed the portrait to the Master of Flémalle, then later wondered if it wasn’t by Rogier. The curators here think maybe it was. But maybe not. Dendrochronological tests, to measure the dates of trees, have estimated the age of the wood panels on which it and other pictures were painted; spectrographs and X-rays have provided proof of under-drawings, pentimenti and erasures. The famous Mérode Altarpiece from the Cloisters in New York, long attributed to the Master of Flémalle, turns out to be partly copied, it seems, from a picture in Brussels, long thought to have been a copy of the altarpiece. That’s nice to know. But in the end the story of this exhibition is that beauty resides not just in the pictures (of course) but in doubt itself. That art of such profound and unprecedented verisimilitude, which took such pains to record the minutest details of the world, should remain shrouded in such a fog is both a paradox and healthy reminder of a basic truth. Great art is always a mystery.
