A mirrored Retourne may not only be read either from first line to last or from last to first as seen in the mirrors, but also by inverting the first and second phrase of each line, either rhyming AAAA or ABAB for each verse. thus the number of variations could be multiplied several times.- two variations on the theme have been included here but could have been extended as in SEASONABLE ROUND ROBIN ROLE REVERSALS robi03_0069_robi03_0000

In respect of SEASONABLE ROUND ROBIN ROLE REVERSALS
This composition has sought to explore linguistic potential. Notes and the initial version are placed before rather than after the poem.
Six variations on a theme have been selected out of a significant number of mathematical possibilities using THE SAME TEXT and a reverse mirror for each version. Mirrors repeat the seasons with the lines in reverse order.

For the second roll the first four syllables of each line are reversed, and sense is retained both in the normal order of seasons and the reversed order as well... The 3rd and 4th variations offer ABAB rhyme schemes retaining the original text. The 5th and 6th variations modify the text into rhyming couplets.

Given the linguistical structure of this symphonic composition the score could be read in inversing each and every line and each and every hemistitch. There are minor punctuation differences between versions.

One could probably attain sonnet status for each of the four seasons and through partioning in 3 groups of 4 syllables extend the possibilites ad vitam.

Le sonneur

Comme un troupeau de boeufs aveugles,
Avec effarement, là-bas, au fond des soirs,
L'ouragan beugle.

Et tout à coup, par au-dessus des pignons noirs,
Que dresse, autour de lui, l'église, au crépuscule,
Rayé d'éclairs, le clocher brûle.

Le vieux sonneur, la tête folle,
La bouche ouverte et sans parole,
Accourt ;
Et le tocsin qu'il frappe, à battants lourds,
Rythme en tempête
Le désespoir qui bat sa tête.

La tour,
Avec, à son faite, la croix brandie,
Epand, vers l'horizon halluciné,
Les crins rouges de l'incendie.
Le bourg nocturne en est illuminé.
Les visages des foules apparues
Peuplent de peur et de clameurs les rues
Et, sur les murs soudain éblouissants,
Les carreaux noirs boivent du sang.

Le vieux sonneur, vers la campagne immense,
Jette, à pleins glas, sa crainte et sa démence.

La tour,
Elle grandit, sur l'horizon qui bouge;
Elle est volante en lueurs rouges,
Par au-dessus des lacs et des marais ;
Ses ardoises, comme des ailes
De paillettes et d'étincelles,
Fuient, dans la nuit, vers les forêts
Au passage des feux, les chaumières s'exhument
De l'ombre et, tout à coup, s'allument
Et, dans l'effondrement du faîte entier, la croix
Choit au brasier, qui tord et broie
Ses bras chrétiens, comme une proie.

Le vieux sonneur sonne si fort qu'il peut
Comme si les flammes brûlaient son Dieu.

La tour,
Le feu s'y creuse en entonnoir,
Par au dedans des murs de pierre,
Gagnant l'étage et le voussoir,
Où saute et rebondit la cloche en sa colère.
