They want the Olympics. We ought to make sure they don't get the Olympics.

The Olympics are coming... and it's a big problem in American politics, because the problem with holding the Olympics this fall is that we're all going to be focused on the Olympics, and it makes that window of opportunity for Gore to win the election that much smaller.

The Marlboro Olympics

We all know of the Olympics
For athletes who are fit
What if we organised new games
And changed the rules a bit?

The tournament - its now unfair
Only the best compete
And all those who're less able
Could never win a heat.

So let our new rules equalise
The young 'n old and slow 'n fast
And let's introduce some new sports
In which the fittest may come last.

We will all compete on equal terms
In worldwide competition
No - this is not an empty dream
But a new Olympic vision.

We need to find us something
That the fittest do not do
And make it central to our games
The Olympics born anew.

We shall introduce some new sports
And new rules for the rest
But what will change above all else
Is smoking cigarettes.

Yes! The Marlboro Olympics!
Or whoever else will pay
To support our global smoking sports
And a more level field of play.

We've already got a logo
Entwined smoke rings in the sky
Just like those Olympic rings
But more pleasing to the eye.

The opportunity's enormous!
Just imagine that you're there
Oh the beauty of gynastics
With smoke swirling in the air!

Or in those cycle races
Where bottled water cyclists get
Now handed out throughout the race
Are successive cigarettes.

The Pub or the Gym?

The Olympics is on it's way to the U.K.
but I remember the last one in Bejing
it caused lots and lots of couch potatoes
to take up Running, Swimming, and Cycling.
But that's what the Olympics can do
it can make you go suddenly to the Gym
go running for hours on the treadmill
lift heavy weights and go for a swim.
The unfit bought tracksuits and trainers
stopped smoking and going to the pub
they became regulars at Holland and Barrets
and spent a fortune at their local Health Club.
But alas all those years lying on the sofa
hadn't helped to strengthen the back
so that noise you heard whilst pumping iron
that was someone's Spine going crack.
But the novelty finally wore off
as the Gym became a living nightmare
so it was goodbye to circuit training
and hello again to the local The Dog and Hare.
So a word of warning to all you couch potatoes
watch out as the Olympics may get you off your settee
so I'd advice those who are out of condition
just lie there and watch it all on your T.V.!

On hindsight

No one believes: in that well worn saying
It'll be all right on the night

Mention the five rings
or that the Olympics are coming to London
this much is absolutely certain
considerable panic and loads of hand wringing

Predictions of unfinished venues
Spiraling costs
Log jam
Gridlock
Pandemonium
Watch out
Ticket touts about
Journalists whipping up panic
over the threat of terrorists

Fiddlesticks!
99% of the Olympics
went off without a hitch

Sceptical killjoys had reminded:
'We're in the midst of a severe financial crisis
We can't afford this...! '
Still others had grumbled:
'60 State of the Art hospitals could have been built
instead of all this extravagance.....'
And, doom-sayers swore:
'London has unpredictable weather
creaking infrastructure
How will it cope?
Think! '

From nay
to cynical complaints of bloated commercialism
To yea
and, finally to - complete addiction

The moment the torch arrived from Greece
the mood of the Country changed completely
Through gale force winds and poring rain
people came out in their droves
to catch a glimpse
and, to celebrate a fleeting moment

The famed British rain
stayed away - in the main
and, London basked in the sun

Countdown To The London Olympics,2012

In four years, once,
World's brethren come
To display skills
In games and sports.

A massive meet;
Expensive too,
To pick the best
From world around.

Most nations join
With hope and pride,
Sending their teams
To do their best.

Nation's flags fly;
Strange lights display;
Anthems are sung
Making all proud.

And people wait
Most eagerly,
To set their eyes
Upon the feast.

But partakers
Get trained to chase
Medallions of
Gold, silver, bronze.

‘High Tech' rules roost;
Seconds decide;
Photo-finish
Is umpire.

A time to fight;
Glory at stake;
Hearts too may break
When wins denied!

Adrenaline
Infuses hearts;
Much sweat and heat,
Strength, speed, decide.

Tumble records;
Spirits are high;
Rivalry plays;
Drugs, sex change course!

2008 Beijing Olympics Poem - Lin Dan versus Lee Chong Wei

lin dan, chong wei
look alike faces
shape like
shuttlecocks

eyes gleaming
like diamonds
the shine of white
velvety feathers

between their
masterful strides
the feverish desire
of two nations
to top the world

to and fro, to and fro
their hearts flew
smashing into one
lifting the other
onto its wing of gold

China's Lin Dan triumphed over Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei to grab the men's single gold for badminton yesterday at the Beijing Summer Olympics. Chong Wei got the first silver medal for Malaysia for the Olympics. Lin seemed to be a far superior player in the two matches that lasted less than 40 minutes beating Chong Wei by 21 - 12 and 21 - 8.. Lin seemed to be flying on wings after he was crowned gold. First he fell flat on the court, then rose to salute the audience afterwhich he threw his racket and shoes to them as presents.

Wheelchair Olympics

Hardly wheelchair Olympics, dumped in a corner
Carer giggles with friends minus little Jack Horner
Waiting for the nurse like furniture in the hall
Conversations are worse- like I'm not there at all.
Speak at me! I feel I should scream
I still exist outside your disabled dream
I'm not a geriatric who likes the odd tipple
My spirit survives; intellect is no cripple
My eye absorbs all art; my heart feels deep the prose
I live every classic part minus the waist down to the toes.
Hardly wheelchair Olympics, touring Sainsbury's with a guide
Inspecting every joint of meat, clinging to my pride
'Anything you've forgotten? ' my helper opts to talk
'Only a bag of frozen peas, and the ability to walk.'
Self pity, someone will say, some naive cheeky chappy
Whlie i sit in cold light of day, waiting for my nappy.
Talking louder is a prerequisite
As they stop with grin so plastic
Manners to be exquisite
When conversing with a 'spastic'
Whipers that you hear, idiots that you flee
They'll never know that fear of silent soliloquy.
So now I smile through the grin of a cynic
Dining out in fine eateries galore
So glad to break free of that clinic
Where my dignity stayed at the door.

Ringing The Bell: The Olypics

You still have fire.
I also have my fire.

we can take both, one's
own, or one unique fire and go
to race in the Olympics;

or we can leave some fire for the next winter
Olympics;

so we can both
sprint run,
wrestle,
do all the gym acrobats,
sand volleyball,
free four hundreds swimming, and
ski under the heavy blue sky.

So, do you have
enough
fire?
or do you need
to barrow some of my fire?

Another Olympic Games For The Wealthy Only

Another Olympic games for the wealthy only doesn't life seem so unfair
In the Athens Olympic Stadium there won't be many there
Who live on a low income or struggle to get by on welfare
And who should win the medals why should I even care?

In life only the so called losers are those that interest me
The people who to circumstance must live in poverty
They won't be at the Olympics for to cheer their heroes on
Or to sigh in disappointment with hopes of a medal gone.

The Olympics ought to be re-named as the Games of Nationalistic Pride
And Athens 04 the destination of millionaires Worldwide
Waving their National flags and banners their patriotism on display
And that money speaks all languages is very relevant to today.

Another Olympic games for the wealthy only in a World of so much poverty
Just a vulgar show of wealth and Nationalistic pride at the opening and closing ceremony
And the have nots must feel content for to watch it on the t v
And which Nation's athletes are the most successful such things won't be worrying me.

Jim Thorpe

Born in May of Eighteen eighty-eight
Though the birth record is obscure
In Oklahoma, in a one room cabin
With brother Charlie, of that we're sure.

His father, Hiram, was a farmer
Mother, Mary James, a Pottawatomie
Descendant of the Chief, Black Hawk
A Warrior with an athletic history.

His Indian name of Wa-Tho-Huk
Translated meaning of “Bright Path”
As his future really seemed to be
Before the typical white man's wrath.

His twin brother passed away at nine
Then in the year, Nineteen, ought four
He attended the Carlisle Indian School
Where he learned football, track, and more.

Trained by legend, Glenn “Pop” Warner
Who had the unique insight to see
The young phenomenon evolving
Into, the great athlete, he would be.

All-American in Nineteen 0-nine
And soon, on the Olympic Team
Sailing across the sea to Sweden
The answer to many-a-youngster's dream.

He trained on board on the journey
And he must have done it very well
For he blew away his competitors
That's what, long lasting records tell.

In the Pentathlon and Decathlon
He won a Gold Medal in each
And it seemed any goal he went for
For him, would be an easy reach.

Gustav, the King of Sweden said it best
After the Nineteen twelve Olympics
“Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world.”
After witnessing, Thorpe's sporting epics.

And, not one to stand on ceremony
That sometimes, great success can bring
He answered, honestly and simply
As they shook hands, and said, “Thanks, King.”
