2010/01/22 Cinderella Tribute

I don’t know how to reach my twin sister, our birthday
in Aquarius, count nine months back for Astrogenetic
conception date, Cancer, the home-making caretaker

My sister makes a home for my parents, I want them to
realize the great qualities of grandma Alice, a Virgo
perfectionist working like Cinderella in caring for us

Mother, Leo-Queen of Hearts, father Conan-Sagittarian-
Barbarian, brother Aries-Attila the Hun, brother Aquarius-
Peter Pan; Tom Thumb-the youngest brother

My sister, the peppery-tongued Duchess and me, Alice
in Wonderland - the Queen of Hearts angered Alice by
claiming she would have been good at mothering

If Cinderella were not there, forgetting every time Cin-
derella was absent, nothing changed; she did not start
mothering; I LIKE the Queen for not mothering me

I want grandma Alice to go to the ball now she is dead,
receive due praise for all she did in caring for seven
people; father, mother and five unruly kids

The Queen should thank Cinderella for working so hard
making amends for the trouble she brought when she
stole for her son, the Queen’s brother

Who was saved by Barbarian-Conan father, the Queen
shouting “Off With Their Heads! ” about us all, especially
because her kids did not qualify as

Pastors or missionaries, my Duchess-sister walks next to the
Queen while stabbing at Conan who has been exploited for
his money, the Queen wants all cash in her hands

‘All money is mine, ’ she declares even though she lost every
property entrusted to her; sister angry because Alice in
Wonderland pays no tribute to the Queen of Hearts

Margaret Alice Comment: Within the context set by the previous poem, “Cosmic Probe”, the description of a lover’s adoration for his beloved becomes a universal ode sung to the abstract values of love, joy and hope personified by light, colours, fragrance and beauty, qualities the poet assigns to his beloved, thus elevating her to the status of an uplifting force because she brings all these qualities to his attention. The poet recognises that these personified values brings him fulfilment and chose the image of a love relationship to illustrate how this comes about; thus a love poem becomes the vehicle to convey spiritual epiphany.

Love Is Immortal

Not being romantic I think reality is even
better than the stories and fantasies we
conjure and life teaches people should
stay the same, not change into princes
as in fairy-tales, a lovable Beast should
stay as he is, Beauty is to accept him

A frog need not change, his chosen girl
should love him croaking in slimy body
or find another with the qualities she re-
quires for happiness - Queen of Hearts
shouldn't marry Conan the Barbarian -
she cannot accommodate him

Attempts to change him is self-delusion,
make him retreat into barbaric behaviour
to assert himself - Christine forgave the
Phantom, he realised she was too good
for him and set her free; this way one
makes an impact - not fighting back

When bitter Phantoms attack to spread
their own despair, the victim can choose
to remain the same, attackers will flee or
learn the secret of a forgiving life, we are
always in charge of our reaction to life -
though we descend into the pit

With despairing types, we can seek help
at the widespread fountains of wisdom
and get up again, love is immortal
if we choose to make it so…

Goodbye Comics, Hello Books

My Superman series had Bizzarro in it
Spiderman originals, Archie and Friends
It was an addiction, I must admit
But hours of reading fun, they did commend.

My brother and I loved reading those comics
We laughed at hilarious Baby Huey
Spent hours on Batman and Robin
Green Lantern's hero stories.

But Daddy did not approve of it and so
He took all the comic books away
Made me read poems and novels to know
Biographies, and so many essays.

Took trips to 'A Tale of Two Cities'
Had fun with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
'Young Women' to 'Pride and Prejudice'
My readings burnt the midnight oil.

Though today the comics would be precious
That collection could fetch a high price
What I read at that time I now put to use
Dad taught me the best, I now realize.

If you were an ancient barbarian, I bet a real embarrassing thing would be if you were sacking Rome and your cape got caught on something and you couldn't get it unhooked, and you had to ask another barbarian to unhook it for you.

Canto the Fourth

I.

I stood in Venice, on the Bridge of Sighs;
A palace and a prison on each hand:
I saw from out the wave her structures rise
As from the stroke of the enchanter’s wand:
A thousand years their cloudy wings expand
Around me, and a dying glory smiles
O’er the far times when many a subject land
Looked to the wingèd Lion’s marble piles,
Where Venice sate in state, throned on her hundred isles!

II.

She looks a sea Cybele, fresh from ocean,
Rising with her tiara of proud towers
At airy distance, with majestic motion,
A ruler of the waters and their powers:
And such she was; her daughters had their dowers
From spoils of nations, and the exhaustless East
Poured in her lap all gems in sparkling showers.
In purple was she robed, and of her feast
Monarchs partook, and deemed their dignity increased.

III.

In Venice, Tasso’s echoes are no more,
And silent rows the songless gondolier;
Her palaces are crumbling to the shore,
And music meets not always now the ear:
Those days are gone - but beauty still is here.
States fall, arts fade - but Nature doth not die,
Nor yet forget how Venice once was dear,
The pleasant place of all festivity,
The revel of the earth, the masque of Italy!

IV.

But unto us she hath a spell beyond
Her name in story, and her long array
Of mighty shadows, whose dim forms despond
Above the dogeless city’s vanished sway;
Ours is a trophy which will not decay
With the Rialto; Shylock and the Moor,
And Pierre, cannot be swept or worn away -
The keystones of the arch! though all were o’er,
For us repeopled were the solitary shore.

DEDICATION

Of great limbs gone to chaos,
A great face turned to night--
Why bend above a shapeless shroud
Seeking in such archaic cloud
Sight of strong lords and light?
