The Odyssey: Book 21

Minerva now put it in Penelope's mind to make the suitors try
their skill with the bow and with the iron axes, in contest among
themselves, as a means of bringing about their destruction. She went
upstairs and got the store room key, which was made of bronze and
had a handle of ivory; she then went with her maidens into the store
room at the end of the house, where her husband's treasures of gold,
bronze, and wrought iron were kept, and where was also his bow, and
the quiver full of deadly arrows that had been given him by a friend
whom he had met in Lacedaemon- Iphitus the son of Eurytus. The two
fell in with one another in Messene at the house of Ortilochus,
where Ulysses was staying in order to recover a debt that was owing
from the whole people; for the Messenians had carried off three
hundred sheep from Ithaca, and had sailed away with them and with
their shepherds. In quest of these Ulysses took a long journey while
still quite young, for his father and the other chieftains sent him on
a mission to recover them. Iphitus had gone there also to try and
get back twelve brood mares that he had lost, and the mule foals
that were running with them. These mares were the death of him in
the end, for when he went to the house of Jove's son, mighty Hercules,
who performed such prodigies of valour, Hercules to his shame killed
him, though he was his guest, for he feared not heaven's vengeance,
nor yet respected his own table which he had set before Iphitus, but
killed him in spite of everything, and kept the mares himself. It
was when claiming these that Iphitus met Ulysses, and gave him the bow
which mighty Eurytus had been used to carry, and which on his death
had been left by him to his son. Ulysses gave him in return a sword
and a spear, and this was the beginning of a fast friendship, although
they never visited at one another's houses, for Jove's son Hercules
killed Iphitus ere they could do so. This bow, then, given him by
Iphitus, had not been taken with him by Ulysses when he sailed for
Troy; he had used it so long as he had been at home, but had left it
behind as having been a keepsake from a valued friend.
Penelope presently reached the oak threshold of the store room;
the carpenter had planed this duly, and had drawn a line on it so as
to get it quite straight; he had then set the door posts into it and
hung the doors. She loosed the strap from the handle of the door,
put in the key, and drove it straight home to shoot back the bolts
that held the doors; these flew open with a noise like a bull
bellowing in a meadow, and Penelope stepped upon the raised
platform, where the chests stood in which the fair linen and clothes
were laid by along with fragrant herbs: reaching thence, she took down
the bow with its bow case from the peg on which it hung. She sat
down with it on her knees, weeping bitterly as she took the bow out of
its case, and when her tears had relieved her, she went to the
cloister where the suitors were, carrying the bow and the quiver, with
the many deadly arrows that were inside it. Along with her came her
maidens, bearing a chest that contained much iron and bronze which her
husband had won as prizes. When she reached the suitors, she stood
by one of the bearing-posts supporting the roof of the cloister,
holding a veil before her face, and with a maid on either side of her.

Six String Music

Six string music
By: jimmy buffett, g.e. smith
1994
Turn off the t.v.
Turn off the crap
Kick off your high heels
Climb up in my lap
Chorus:
And Ill play music
A song from me to you
Simple six string music
A ballad or the blues
No interruptions
>from the telephone
Dont need call waitin
Just you and me alone
Chorus:
And my six string music (six string music)
A song from me to you
Simple six string music (six string music)
A ballad or the blues
Oh I remember that night in africa
My daughter and my little guitar
Straddling the equator
The king of zanzibar
Those shy black hidden faces
They didnt know me from adams cat
But the words and the singin
And the people in a ring
And the whole night went like that
Now some folks like icing
Some folks like cake
Some swim in the ocean
Some paddle in a lake
Well you can get into beethoven
Or you can groove on jimmy reed
But keep it simple stupid
All we really need is
Chorus:
Six string music (six string music)
A song from me to you
Simple six string music (six string music)
A ballad or the blues
Six string music (six string music)
Aint no symphony
Its just six string music (six string music)
So elementary

String-a-long

String-a-long, string-a-long, thats what I am
String-a-long, string-a-long, thats what I am
String-a-long - thats all I am is just your
String-a-long someone that you just seem to
Bring along, whenever you are all alone
And need some company you always turn to me
String-a-long - thats all I do is sort of
String-a-long you never seem to notice
Im along although I hope and pray that
You will need me someday
All I ever do - is tag along with you
No matter where you chance to roam
Im just satisfied - to be by your side
Here - there - near - far - I wanna be anywhere you are
Treat me wrong and maybe soon youll lose your
String-a-long, someone may come and bring a
Love thats strong and wanna string-a-long with me
Break:
All I ever do - is tag along with you
No matter where you chance to roam
Im just satisfied - to be by your side
Here - there - near - far - I wanna be anywhere you are
Treat me wrong - and maybe soon youll lose your
String-a-long someone may come and bring a
Love thats strong and wanna string-a-long with me
Ill find somebody new - wont treat me like you do
Ill find somebody new - wont treat me like you do
Ill find somebody new - wont treat me like you do

We Want A Rock

Where was i? I forgot
The point that I was making
I said if I was smart that I would
Save up for a piece of string
And a rock to wind the string around
Everybody wants a rock
To wind a piece of string around
Everybody wants a rock
To wind a piece of string around
Throw the crib door wide
Let the people crawl inside
Someone in this town
Is trying to burn the playhouse down
They want to stop the ones who want
A rock to wind a string around
But everybody wants a rock
To wind a piece of string around
Throw the crib door wide
Let the people crawl inside
Someone in this town
Is trying to burn the playhouse down
They want to stop the ones who want
A rock to wind a string around
But everybody wants a rock
To wind a piece of string around
If I were a carpenter id
Hammer on my piglet, id
Collect the seven dollars and id
Buy a big prosthetic forehead
And wear it on my real head
Everybody wants prosthetic
Foreheads on their real heads
Everybody wants prosthetic
Foreheads on their real heads
Throw the crib door wide
Let the people crawl inside
Someone in this town
Is trying to burn the playhouse down
They want to stop the ones who want
Prosthetic foreheads on their heads
But everybody wants prosthetic
Foreheads on their real heads
Throw the crib door wide
Let the people crawl inside
Someone in this town
Is trying to burn the foreheads down
They want to stop the ones who want
A rock to wind a string around
But everybody wants a rock
To wind a piece of string around

String Of Lies

I've got no politics no influential friend or two
I've got ideas but it's nothing I picked up at school
I might be running but I'm never running back to you

And here's a letter from the real world I don't expect you'll reply
And anything you're gonna tell me it's just another lie

I had to wait so long that weeks and months that passed me by
You've got no power and my situation don't apply
You ask me how I am I lie and say I'm doing fine

And with your sugar sweetened alibi there was a truth I never knew
And all the attitude you gave me it's coming back to you

String of lies it's always compromise with you
String of lies you know there's nothing left to do
String of lies it's been a string of lies with you

And here's a letter from the real world I don't expect your reply
And anything you're gonna tell me it's just another lie

String of lies we always compromise for you
String of lies you know there's nothing left to do
String of lies it's been a string of lies with you
String of lies we always compromise for you
And here's a letter from the real world

I've Got The World On A String

I've got the world on a string
Sitting on a rainbow
Got the string around my finger
What a world, what a life - I'm in love
I've got a song that I sing
I can make the rain go
Any time I move my finger
Lucky me, can't you see - I'm in love
Life's is a beautiful thing
As long as I hold the string
I'd be a silly so-and-so
If I should ever let it go
I've got the world on a string
Sitting on a rainbow
Got the string around my finger
What a world, what a life - I'm in love
Life's is a beautiful thing
As long as I hold the string
I'd be a silly so-and-so
If I should ever let it go
I've got the world on a string
Sitting on a rainbow
Got the string around my finger
I'm walking around with my head in a clouds
And I'm feeling so good
I don't want to come down
And I'm shouting it out
I'm in love

Please Dont Drag That String Around

(words & music by blackwell - scott)
You like to keep me dangling on a string
cause you know without you my life dont mean a thing
So I beg you
Please dont drag that string around, oh no
Well, what if it should break
Oh, tell me, what would I do then
Keep that string up off the ground
Oh, yeah, remember my heart is tied to the other end
Yes, Im your puppet, my heart is in your hand
One twist of the wrist and I jump to your command
So I beg you
Please dont drag that string around, oh no
Well, what if it should break
What would I do then
Baby, keep that string up off the ground
Oh, yeah, remember my heart is tied to the other end
I feel inside me, as sure as anything
One day Ill mean more to you than a puppet on a string
So I beg you
Please dont drag that string around, oh no
Well, what if it should break
Oh, tell me, what would I do then
Keep that string up off the ground
Oh, yeah, remember my heart is tied to the other end

I Love The Sound Of Crashing Guitars

Mao mao mao...
I love the sound of smashing guitars /
I love the sound of crashing guitars /
Red guitars against the wall / big guitars can turn so small /
I love the sound of crashing guitars / show it!
The 6-string kick inside / the 6-string kick inside /
The 6-string kick inside.
I love the sound of breaking guitars /
I love the sound of crashing guitars /
Hey you long haired vintage jesus /
Break the guitar into 1000 pieces /

The 6-string kick inside / the 6-string kick inside.
Dont you love the sound of crashing guitars? /
Dont you love the sound of crashing electric guitars? /
Dont you love that sound, drivin in your car /
Dont you love the sound of crashing electric guitars? /
Dont you? / dont you?
I love the touch of watching the stars /
I love the sound of trashing guitars /
Custom made, townshends ace /
Smash the axe and break the case /

Lucky Day Bad Advice

You cant spend all your life
Sittin on a cloud playing a twelve-string
You cant spend all your life
Sittin on a cloud playing a twelve-string
But youll make this day again, this lucky, lucky day again
But its not just a day again until you touched it
Get yourself a pedal-steel player
Theres money in the cabaret business

You cant spend all your life
Sittin on a cloud playing a twelve-string
You cant spend all your life

But its not just a day again until you touched it
Dont put that song in your album
You dont need no sax in the band
Dont put that song in your album

You cant spend all your life
Sittin on a cloud playing a twelve-string
But youll make this day again, this lucky, lucky day again
But its not just a day again until you touched it
Wake up you gotta make a change
You gotta dress like one of the levellers

Allalu Mo Wauleen (The Beggar’s Address to His Bag)

GOOD neighbors, dear, be cautious,
And covet no man’s pounds or pence.
Ambition’s greedy maw shun,
And tread the path of innocence!
Dread crooked ways and cheating,
And be not like those hounds of Hell,
Like prowling wolves awaiting,
Which once upon my footsteps fell.

An allalu mo wauleen,
My little bag I treasured it;
’Twas stuffed from string to sauleen,
A thousand times I measured it!

Should you ever reach Dungarvan,
That wretched hole of dole and sin,
Be on your sharpest guard, man,
Or the eyes out of your head they’ll pin.
Since I left sweet Tipperary,
They eased me of my cherished load,
And left me light and airy,
A poor dark man upon the road!

An allalu mo wauleen!
No hole, no stitch, no rent in it,
’Twas stuffed from string to sauleen,
My half-year’s rent was pent in it.

A gay gold ring unbroken,
A token to a fair young maid,
Which told of love unspoken,
To one whose hopes were long delayed,
A pair of woolen hoseen,
Close knitted, without rub or seam,
And a pound of weed well-chosen,
Such as smokers taste in dream!

An allalu mo wauleen,
Such a store I had in it;
’Twas stuffed from string to sauleen,
And nothing mean or bad in it!

Full oft in cosy corner
We’d sit beside a winter fire,
Nor envied prince or lord, or
To kingly rank did we aspire.
But twice they overhauled us,
The dark police of aspect dire,
Because they feared, Mo Chairdeas,
You held the dreaded Fenian fire!

Thins and Slips Until It's Gone

With their values hanging on,
To a string that thins and dips.
With their values hanging on,
To a string that thins and slips.

It has been easy to dismiss,
What society is missing.
And when time comes to confront it...
No one wants to own their wrongs.

It has been easy to express,
An unhappiness is growing.
But no one wants their own to show,
Because they don't want this confessed.

With their values hanging on,
To a string that thins and dips.

People want to say that others are out of their minds.
And they choose not to see themselves reflecting the times.
People want to say that others have no self control.
With wishes to see themselves,
Strong, brave and bold.

With their values hanging on,
To a string that thins and slips.

It has been easy to dismiss,
What society is missing.
And when time comes to confront it...
No one wants to own their wrongs.

With their values hanging on,
To a string that thins and dips.
With their values hanging on,
To a string that thins and slipssss...
Until it's gone!

Floobie Doobie Doo

As I walk down to Bishop Street I met a girl who smiled so sweet
Now she was young and pretty too
And on a string she walked with a thing called the Floobie Doobie Doo
Oh the Floobie Doobie Doo now what is that it ain't no dog and it ain't no cat
It's not the doll with eyes of blue
I never seen such a thing as thing called the Floobie Doobie Doo

It had one tooth five purple toes sixteen elbows and a twelve-foot nose
You never see one in the Zoo
I mean a thing like a thing on a string called the Floobie Doobie Doo
I told that girl lemme take you home and maybe we can be alone hahaha
She said I'd love to go home with you
But I have to cling to my thing on the string called the Floobie Doobie Doo

Well I took her home that very night we talked a while and I dimmed the light
She cuddled close and the next thing I knew
Just as soon as it seen us in between us jumped the Floobie Doobie Doo
It stayed all night it stayed all year I never got to hold you near
I said sweet baby I wanna cling to you
But she wanna cling to the thing on the string called the Floobie Doobie Doo
Oh the Floobie Doobie Doo oh now what is that
It ain't no dog it ain't no cow it ain't no cat
It's not the doll with eyes of blue
You just can't swing with the thing on the string called the Floobie Doobie Doo

Well she cried and cried she wiped her eye she said farewell so long goodbye
For though I loved you yes I do
I can't reveal the love that I feel for the Floobie Doobie Doo
I never see her anymore she never knocks upon my door
And every night alone and blue
I sit and swing about a swing on a thing
I mean I sit and think about a swing on a thing
I mean I sit and sing about a thing on a string called the Floobie Doobie Doo oooh

A Stray Kitten

In the spring he toyed with her
her ball of string was long
she tossed it high and higher
gamboling along.

In summer they were lovers
passionate and hot,
her ball of string was short,
she'd found a lover's knot.

By Autumn love had cooled
she found she'd lost allure
The string she'd played with
frayed and tore away.

By winter she'd been ousted
she shivered in the snow.
Her ball of string was cut
and she, a little kitten, froze.

Puppet On A String

(words & music by tepper - bennett)
Every time you look at me
I,m as helpless as can be
I become a puppet on a string
You can do most anything to me
All you do is touch my hand
And your wish is my command
I become a puppet on a string
You can do most anything to me
If you really love me
Darling please be kind
I offer you the truest love
That you will ever find
Take my heart and please be fair
Handle it with loving care
For Im just a puppet on a string
You can do most anything to me

The Image

Written by: richard marx & fee waybill
Hope you dont believe a word
Of all the things I know youve heard about me
Really just a pack of ies
You see the truth before your eyes around me
Hard to keep it straight
The real from the ruse
Probably way too late
What can I do, but its
Not what you think
Not what you hear
Not what you see
Its just the image
Its all on a string
All fantasy
Not really me
Its just the image
Would it be too much to ask
That you could just gvie me the chance to prove it
Or would it only be a waste of time
To try to make you change your mind and use it
What Ive been looking for
Isnt what I thought
Not behind the golden door
Youre all Ive got, and its
Not what you think
Not what you hear
Not what you see
Its just the image
Its all on a string
All fantasy
Not really me
Its just the image
What Ive been looking for
Isnt what I thought
Not behind the golden door

Ninth Book

EVEN thus. I pause to write it out at length,
The letter of the Lady Waldemar.–

'I prayed your cousin Leigh to take you this,
He says he'll do it. After years of love,
Or what is called so,–when a woman frets
And fools upon one string of a man's name,
And fingers it for ever till it breaks,–
He may perhaps do for her such thing,
And she accept it without detriment
Although she should not love him any more
And I, who do not love him, nor love you,
Nor you, Aurora,–choose you shall repent
Your most ungracious letter, and confess,
Constrained by his convictions, (he's convinced)
You've wronged me foully. Are you made so ill,
You woman–to impute such ill to me?
We both had mothers,–lay in their bosom once.
Why, after all, I thank you, Aurora Leigh,
For proving to myself that there are things
I would not do, . . not for my life . . nor him . .
Though something I have somewhat overdone,–
For instance, when I went to see the gods
One morning, on Olympus, with a step
That shook the thunder in a certain cloud,
Committing myself vilely. Could I think,
The Muse I pulled my heart out from my breast
To soften, had herself a sort of heart,
