The Winners

("The Story of the Gadsbys")

What the moral? Who rides may read.
When the night is thick and the tracks are blind
A friend at a pinch is a friend, indeed,
But a fool to wait for the laggard behind.
Down to Gehenna or up to the Throne,
He travels the fastest who travels alone.

White hands cling to the tightened rein,
Slipping the spur from the booted heel,
Tenderest voices cry " Turn again!"
Red lips tarnish the scabbarded steel,
High hopes faint on a warm hearth-stone--
He travels the fastest who travels alone.

One may fall but he falls by himself--
Falls by himself with himself to blame.
One may attain and to him is pelf--
Loot of the city in Gold or Fame.
Plunder of earth shall be all his own
Who travels the fastest and travels alone.

Wherefore the more ye be helpen-.en and stayed,
Stayed by a friend in the hour of toil,
Sing the heretical song I have made--
His be the labour and yours be the spoil.
Win by his aid and the aid disown--
He travels the fastest who travels alone!

The Fastest Guitar Alive

Orbison/dees
Hey here I go a lucky so and so
Happy cos I know Ive got my fast guitar
Singing pretty songs, knowing I belong
I am first and last, and always a fast guitar
The fastest guitar alive
Rattling strings like a gattling gun
Shaped like a lovely woman
Stay right where you are
My guitar is a fast guitar
The fastest guitar alive
Im rolling on like a rolling stone
Gathering no moss, I play a boss guitar
The fastest guitar alive
Strumming like a battling soldiers drum
Shaped like a lovely woman
Stay right where you are
My guitar is a fast guitar
The fastest guitar alive
Hey here I go a lucky so and so
Happy cos I know Ive got my fast guitar
The fastest guitar
The fastest guitar
The fastest guitar alive

The Traveller

Reply to Rudyard Kipling’s ‘He travels the fastest who travels alone.’

Who travels alone with his eye on the heights,
Though he laughs in the day time oft weeps on the nights;

For courage goes down at the set of the sun,
When the toil of the journey is all borne by one.

He speeds but to grief though full gaily he ride
Who travels alone without love at his side.

Who travels alone without lover of friend
But hurries from nothing, to naught at the end.

Though great be his winnings and high be his goal,
He is bankrupt in wisdom and beggared in soul.

Life’s one gift of value to him is denied
Who travels alone without love at his side.

It is easy enough in this world to make haste
If one live for that purpose – but think of the waste;

For life is a poem to leisurely read,
And the joy of the journey lies not in its speed.

Oh! vain his achievement and petty his pride
Who travels alone without love at his side.

She Ran so Fast

There was once a girl who wanted to run fast
She was the fastest in her home, the fastest in her class
She ran so fast she would break all the rules
Not to mention, all the records in all of her schools

All people called her, ‘Fastest in the world’
But that wasn’t nearly fast enough for this girl
She ran so fast gravity couldn’t carry her
And then one day, she ran past the sound barrier

One time,2 times,3 times, and 4
She mocked space shuttles in her quest to run more
Her feet never sored, her soul never tired
She ran so fast, she was lean as a wire
As she grew older, so did her legend
Her ambition grew bolder and made her feel destined

To become the fastest that ever existed
She was faster than stars shooting at night
But still she kept running, still she persisted
Till she outran her shadow and ran out her life

Some say that she ran faster than thought
And she could catch the waves of a laugh
Others say her physique was always so taut
She took the pictures and then outran the flash
“Life moved too slow, ” was her last known opinion
Before she ran herself into oblivion

Black July

The fastest dog in Millstreet when I was a young boy
Was owned and bred by Maurice Connors his name was Black July
Trained by Paddy O Keeffe at Dooneen a leading trainer then
In the Kennedy cup at Limerick he had a famous win.

A son of Cheeky Tippy and Maddest Lily the striking black and white
Was Ireland's fastest greyhound when he was in full flight
The Irish Derby favourite he was the one to beat
And one of the fastest greyhounds to come out of Millstreet.

Sold to Harry O Neill the bookmaker the word it got around
For a record price for a greyhound then 'twas said two thousand pounds
And Black July for Maurice Connors had surely paid his way
For two thousand pounds in those times worth thirty grand today.

Since Denny Dennehy and John Joe Cronin's hounds brought to their Paish fame
Duhallow home of champion dogs so many one could name
And Black July a top class dog when he was in his prime
The mighty speedster from Liscreagh inspired the bards to rhyme.

It must be nearly forty years how quick the time did fly
Since Millstreet had a champion dog his name was Black July
And Millstreet had many great dogs since of their big wins we hear
And the latest Donie Mahony's champ the great Mountleader Peer.

Trained at Dooneen by Paddy O Keeffe a leading trainer then
In the Kennedy cup at Limerick he had a famous win
The fastest greyhound of his year when I was just a boy
Was owned and bred at Liscreagh the mighty Black July.

True Love Travels On A Gravel Road

(words & music by frazier - owens)
How many girls choose cotton dress worlds
When they could have satins and lace
And stand by her man, never once letting shade touch her face
How many hearts could live through all the winters
Weve known and still not be cold
True love travels on a gravel road.
Love is a stranger and hearts are in danger
All through streets paved with gold
For true love travels on a gravel road.
Down through the years weve had hard times and tears
But they only helped our love grow
And well stay together no matter how strong the wind blows
Not once have I seen your blue eyes filled with envy
Or stray from the one that you hold
Oh true love travels on a gravel road.
Love is a stranger and hearts are in danger
All through streets paved with gold
For true love travels on a gravel road.
Yeah, true love travels on a gravel road. mmmm
True love travels on a gravel road.
True love travels on a gravel road.

Blackie Dalton

Orbison/dees
Roy produced and sang backing vocals bill dees sang lead vocal
Blackie dalton was a gun fighter
They say that he was the fastest gun alive
Before you could draw your gun from the holster
You would surely die
Blackie dalton was a gun fighter
He killed three men in abilone and four in wichita
He wounded one in kansas city
Let him live out of pity
He was tired of killing them all
Then one night in a brawl
His brother john got killed in wichita
Defending his brother's name
The blackie dalton fame had brought his brother shame
He got word in tucson about his brother john
They heard him say as he left that day
"i've got to hunt him down
Then i'll throw my gun away"
Lonely night on the trail
He'd listen to the coyotes wail
And sympathise with the cry
For one more man must die
Blackie dalton was a gun fighter
The fastest gun alive is what they say
He caught that man shot him down
Turned and walked away
Yes, he threw his gun away
Blackie dalton was a gun fighter
But he turned his back on the life that he had led
A man remembered from kansas city
Didn't have any pity
He shot blackie dead
Yes he shot blackie dead
Lonely nights on the trail
The cowboys tell a different tale
Blackie didn't really die
No, blackie didn't really die
Blackie dalton was a gun fighter
The fastest gun alive is what they said
He changed his name and in his grave
The kansas man instead
With this marker at his head
"blackie dalton was a gun fighter

The Falcon and the Ostrich

Hi! Good morning. I am Falco Peregrinus
As fastest flying bird, the record now I hold
In horizontal flight my speed is ninety
And in a stoop I clock two hundred seventy
That's in miles per hour, I do so easily
No other animal will dare compete with me
Wether they be from land, from the sky or the sea
Preys much larger than I, I can always subdue,
Which so many believe, I stab with my claws
That is far from the truth, I stun them with a blow
With my clenched feet and then for them back I would go
With this, to me, my friend, what else to say have you

Hi there! I am Mr. Struthio Camelus
My name in English means a long-necked sparrow
I am the biggest bird in existence today
And lay the largest egg, unknown to you maybe
Men benefit from me in so many a way
From my eggs, meat, feather, leather, ee tee cee

Yes, in flight you're the fastest and to you I agree
But on foot an equal to me there'll never be
I'm the fastest runner in the world of the birds
In my speed of about forty-five mph
I will beat and surpass most of your equine friends
And if our topic shall be longevity
My lifespan in years is five plus seventy
Yours is one-fifth of mine, or fifteen years only

How can you be a bird? to this the falcon said
And why do you not fly, two wings you also have
Pitifully you lack things an avian should have
Crop, gallbladder, two toes, if just to name a few
I will not call myself a bird if I were you

Valentines Day

Im driving a big lazy car rushin up the highway in the dark
I got one hand steady on the wheel and one hands tremblin over my heart
Its pounding baby like its gonna bust right on through
And it aint gonna stop till Im alone again with you
A friend of mine became a father last night
When we spoke in his voice I could hear the light
Of the skies and the rivers the timberwolf in the pines
And that great jukebox out on route 39
They say he travels fastest who travels alone
But tonight I miss my girl mister tonight I miss my home
Is it the sound of the leaves
Left blown by the wayside
Thats got me out here on this spooky old highway tonight
Is it the cry of the river
With the moonlight shining through
That aint what scares me baby
What scares me is losing you
They if you die in your dreams you really die in your bed
But honey last night I dreamed my eyes rolled straight back in my head
And gods light came shinin on through
I woke up in the darkness scared and breathin and born anew
It wasnt the cold river bottom I felt rushing over me
It wasnt the bitterness of a dream that didnt come true
It wasnt the wind in the grey fields I felt rushing through my arms
No no baby it was you
So hold me close honey say youre forever mine
And tell me youll be my lonely valentine

Lucky Man

Runnin down the highway half-past eleven
Waitin for my odometer to roll straight sevens
Im a lucky man
I went to see the gypsy the other night
She looked in my palm, looked me in the eye
And said youre a lucky man
Some folks got fortune, some got eyes of blue
What you got will always see you through
Youre a lucky man
Pa went from the army to the factory to the killin yard
I make my living with my hands hind the wheel of this car
Im a lucky man
Messin with me, man, it wouldnt be wise
Roll them dice, son . . . snake eyes
Im a lucky man
Had a girl in calgary, I gave her up
Man, that love thing was messin with my luck
And Im a lucky man
Ill wake up tomorrow morning in another state
Kiss me now, baby, before its too late
If you wanna kiss a lucky man
I dont miss no girl, I dont miss no home
He travels fastest who travels alone
Hes a lucky man
A man with the world in the palm of his hands

I Know What I Want

Bring the beat back don't believe to hype
Bring the beat back don't believe to hype
Bring the beat back don't believe to hype
Its a jam and I do what I like
Listen to my voice and start to dance
I promise you this will advance
I am back with my line and I started to climb
Welcome to the jam I am rocking again
From my mind and my heart to your body and your feet
I know what you want its that beat from the street
Mr. DJ put the jam up
Pump it up to the night is done
Lets go down, down to they underground
I am kicking your back Bobo is in town
It's a jam and I do what I like
Bring the beat back don't believe to hype
You have your bass in the place together as one
Try to run then you gonna have fun
I know what you want and you want it now
I know what you want when you hear the sound
I know what I want, and I want it now
I know what I want, when I hear the sound
I know what I want, and I want it now
I know what I want, when I hear the sound
Everything's alright, alright
And the feel makes me blind
I know what I want, and I want it now
I know what I want, when I hear the sound
I know what I want
I know what I want
If you try to be you got to be a king
And give the world you are everything
I'm not the greatest dancer with the fastest tunes
I'm not the fastest rapper that you ever knew
But wait it sounds like a mystery
But no one knows who you really wanna be
Deep in the night i bring you delight
And leave all the troubles by your side

Orange Blossom Special

Look a-yonder comin'
Comin' down that railroad track
Hey, look a'yonder comin'
Comin' down that railroad track
It's the Orange Blossom Special
Bringin' my baby back
Well I'm goin down to Florida
And get some sand in my shoes
Or maybe Californy
And get some sand in my shoes
I'll ride that Orange Blossom Special
And lose these New York blues
Say man, when you going back to Florida?
When am I goin' back to Florida? I don't know, don't reckon I ever will
Aint you worried about getting your nourishment in New York?
Well, I don't care if I do-die-do-die-do-die-do-die
Hey talk about a-ramblin'
She's the fastest train on the line
Talk about a-travelin'
She's the fastest train on the line
It's that orange blossom special
Rollin' down the seaboard line

Ramblin On My Mind

(by robert johnson)
I got rambling, I got rambling all on my mind.
I got rambling, I got rambling all on my mind.
I hates to leave my baby, but she treats me so unkind.
I got mean things, I got mean things all on my mind.
I got mean things, I got mean things all on my mind.
I hates to leave my baby, but she treats me so unkind.
Im going down to the station, catch the fastest train I see.
Im going down to the station, catch the fastest train I see.
I got the blues bout miss so-and-so, and her sons got the blues about me.
I got rambling, I got rambling all on my mind.
I got rambling, I got rambling all on my mind.
I hates to leave my baby, but she treats me so unkind.

Hot Rod Sleigh

I saw one of Santa's helpers at the grocery store today
He was standin' at the front door givin' candy canes away
And I told him I was worried about a certain situation
How's Santa gonna get here with this risin' population
He said, I talked to the north pole sometime late last week
And it seems that dear ol' Santa has got somethin' up his sleeve
As I leaned in to listen, he whispered in my hear
He said, don't you dare repeat a single word of this, you hear
He said, boss man's all excited 'cause his new sled's almost ready
And they say he's got it painted up, looks just like Richard Petty's
And Rudolph and the reindeer, they're lookin' long and mean
It's the fastest, highest flyin' winter wonderland machine
I ain't seen it for myself, but I heard say
Santa Claus has got a hot rod sleigh
It's got a heater in the floorboard 'cause he's gettin' old, you know
And a windshield with the wipers should he happen on some snow
Landin' lights of red and white all stuck along the side
So he can spot the rooftops as he's fallin' from the sky
He's got a king-size toy bin, locks in all the latches
And a big old custom air seat with a safety belt that matches
Only thing about it that worries him a heap
Is that he might be here just long before the children get to sleep
He said, boss man's all excited 'cause his new sled's almost ready
And they say he's got it painted up, looks just like Richard Petty's
And Rudolph and the reindeer, they're lookin' long and mean
It's the fastest, highest flyin' winter wonderland machine
I ain't seen it for myself, but I heard say

The Two Devines

It was shearing time at the Myall Lake,
And then rose the sound through the livelong day
Of the constant clash that the shear-blades make
When the fastest shearers are making play;
But there wasn't a man in the shearers' lines
That could shear a sheep with the two Devines.
They had rung the sheds of the east and west,
Had beaten the cracks of the Walgett side,
And the Cooma shearers had given them best --
When they saw them shear, they were satisfied.
From the southern slopes to the western pines
They were noted men, were the two Devines.

'Twas a wether flock that had come to hand,
Great struggling brutes, that shearers shirk,
For the fleece was filled with the grass and sand,
And seventy sheep was a big day's work.
"At a pound a hundred it's dashed hard lines
To shear such sheep," said the two Devines.

But the shearers knew that they's make a cheque
When they came to deal with the station ewes;
They were bare of belly and bare of neck
With a fleece as light as a kangaroo's.
"We will show the boss how a shear-blade shines
When we reach those ewes," said the two Devines.

But it chanced next day, when the stunted pines
Were swayed and stirred by the dawn-wind's breath,
That a message came for the two Devines
That their father lay at the point of death.
So away at speed through the whispering pines
Down the bridle-track rode the two Devines.

It was fifty miles to their father's hut,
And the dawn was bright when they rode away;
At the fall of night, when the shed was shut
And the men had rest from the toilsome day,
To the shed once more through the darkening pines
On their weary steeds came the two Devines.

"Well, you're back right sudden,"the super said;
"Is the old man dead and the funeral done?"
"Well, no sir, he ain't not exactly dead,
But as good as dead," said the eldest son --
"And we couldn't bear such a chance to lose,
So we came straight back to tackle the ewes."
