Rudy

Rudy toot, its been a long time
Since we said goodbye
Last night tina made me think of you
Dont you ask me why
When I heard that you were coming
My head was spinning
My heart was pumping
Youre not mine
No youre not mine
Chorus:
Rudy toot, do you remember
All the nights we shared together
Rudy youre still always on my mind
Rudy if you find youre lonely
I will be your one and only
Rudy youre still always on my mind
Rudy you know you heard me crying
But you paid me no attention
All alone I was calling your name
But you left me in suspension
You know the love that you had taken
My world was shakin
My heart was breaking
Youre not mine
No youre not mine
Chorus x 3 (fade)

Tire Shop

I went down yesterday
to fix a leak in my tire. Off Bridge street
there's a place 95 cents
flats fixed,
smeary black paint on warped wood plank
between two bald tires.
I go in, an old Black man
with a Jackie Gleason hat greasy soft
with a mashed cigar stub in mouth
and another old Chicano man
working the other
pneumatic hissing tire changer. The walls are black with rubber
soot blown black dust everywhere
and rows of worn tires on gnawed board racks for sale,
air hoses snaking and looped over the floor.
I greet the two old men
'Yeah, how's it going!'
No response.
They look up at me as if I just gave them a week to live.
'I got a tire needs a tube.'
Rudy, a young Chicano emerges from the black part of the room
pony tailed and plump
walks me out to my truck and looks at the tire.
'It'll cost you five bucks to take off and change.'
I nod.
He tells the old Chicano, who pulls the roller jack
with a long steel handle outside,
and I wait in the middle of the grunting oval tire
changing machines,
while the old guy goes out and returns with my tire.
He looks at me like a disgruntled Carny
handling the ferriswheel
for the millionth time
and I'm just another ache in the arm,
a spoiled kid.
I watch the two old men work the tire machines
step on the foot levers that send the bars around
flipping the tire from the rim
and I wonder what brought these two old men to work here
on this gray evening in February –
are they ex-cons?
Drunks or addicts?
He whips the tube out,' Rudy ' he yells
and I see a gaping hole in the tube,
'Can't patch that,' Rudy says
Then in Spanish Slang says, 'no podemos pachiarlo,'
'we got a pile of old tubes over there, we'll do it for ten
dollars.'
At first I think he might be taking me
but I hedge away from that thought

La Dame Du Palais De La Reine

SOPHIE, in shocks of scarlet lace,
Receives her usual embrace
Beneath a hedge, behind a curtain,
Or in the chambers of His Grace.
Whether a kiss be worth the care
Five minions wasted on her hair,
Sophie herself is half uncertain,
Paused in adorable despair.
When past beseeching Man she floats
In golden-coasted petticoats,
A shaft of irritation passes;
Like colic; but with antidotes.
Then serious doubts occur of Love
That spoils the Peacock, sours the Dove,
And mixes up the lower classes
So hopelessly with those above.
Is the bird Passion worth the lime?
Can the small Amor turn to crime
By ruining skirts—and the digestion?
Such problems occupy her time.
But often these objections thaw
To counts with viols—or grooms with straw—
And Sophie, giving up the question,
Bends to some strange but natural law.
With books of music, diamond rings,
Spaniels and roses, fireworks, swings,
Her lovers come. But Sophie sighs,
Whose thoughts are fixed on Higher Things.
Between the sleepy kisses given,
Her mind by grave debate is driven,
Perplexity distracts those eyes
Which, lovers vow, are lost in Heaven!

The Window

Little Sophie sat by her window
on every single day,
just looking for someone
with whom she could play.

The streets were full of people
but none of them she knew.
She waved at them as they went by
and some of them waved too.

But they were busy people
going everywhere.
None of them had time for play,
no time to spare.

Her sisters and her brother
all went to school.
She could not go. She was only four
and that was against the rule.

So by the window Sophie sat
and one day someone smiled.
It was a mother passing by
with her little child.

And after several days of this
a knock came at her door.
It was the mother with her child
who also was just four.

The mother said 'My little one is lonely.
She needs a friend like you.'
So Sophie clapped her hands and said
'I know what we can do.'

And so they played for hours
and then her friend did say
'Can we sit by your window
and wave to people today? '

Why The Red Nose Rudolph?

His nose lights St. Nick’s sleigh
This intrepid reindeer leader
Helps his fellows find their way
It’s said, he’s an under achiever

You ask, “Why is his nose so red? ”
Is that whiskey under his bridle?
Is drinking why his eyes are red?
We must find out, not stand idle

Perhaps it’s time to notify AA
Get Rudy help for reckless drinking
We, his many fans can't be blasé
While this reindeer’s life is sinking!

We must not hold Santa to blame
Lest he and Rudolph share a jug
For it would be a downright shame
To see them drinking “chug-a-lug”

Sorry for our doubt dear Rudy
It’s Santa’s reputation we protect
We’re just performing civic duty
We really meant no disrespect

Shine on our bright red nose friend
We’ll watch the skies till you ascend

Saturday In The Town Square

The women gather are dressed to the nines;
Floral designs of cornpetal blue and lace
Adorning their cool blouses.

A black pit holding fire
Smoulders and is left to burn, on the side,
Offering smoke to the pellucid air.

A newly made gallows stands,
And a very tall man in a tall hat,
With an axe and a black mask,
Takes his place-
He is in charge.

A large crowd gathers, talkative
And unashamed, in a hurry though.
They lead out shackled red-faced Rudy who
Looks like he has a belly full of gin,
But he really has a gut full of regret.

Exactly at eleven the tall man
In the black mask chops the rope around Rudy's neck.
Dropping hard and snapping his neck.
He uncleans his pants quietly.

What a fine thing for a town to do
On a bright crystal Saturday morn;
They split into two groups,
Some laughing loudly,
Some shouting and hollering for more.

At last the fire is out
And no more smoke sullens the square;
The next day being Sunday,
The day of peace, forgiveness, prayer.

New Poetess Laureate for UK

This is a formal announcement today:
we have a new Poet Laureate.. hip hip hooray..

‘But who is he? Oh.. it’s a she-poet Laureate…?
so (because I don’t read poetry, of course..)
is that something I should shout hooray at?
or have committees once again, backed the wrong horse? ’

Well, she says she’s not ‘going to write
for Edward and Sophie’…
she’s Sapphic and butch, and called
Carol Ann Duffy

and you can guess, from what she says
that there’ll be no Royal seal in wax
on her democratic classless ways…

(Right now, Supplement sub-editors are trawling her stuff
to find something printable
that’s ‘poetic’ enough…)

The story is, ‘she’d have got it on the last occasion’
except for the aforementioned Sapphic persuasion…

But aren’t poets supposed to be beyond such trivial pursuits? …
and just write poetry and truth; in high heels or in boots?

(And there’s always the hope, with or without Royal permission,
she might say something new about the female condition…)

so, Edward and Sophie with your middle-class morals –
watch out! We could be in for some hard-hitting quarrels
re ‘The Nature of Poetry’ … and about time too:
since poetry’s subject is the deepest me and you…

so the Forum poets here (in this empty music-hall)
hope you stir us up, and have a prancing, dancing Artists’ Ball;

as with controversial old Ted Crow, Poet Laureate and toughie,
we shan’t expect respect – coz you ain’t no fluffy Duffy…

Now chaps - gold watch and thanks to Andrew’s poetic potion:
you could call it - for what words are worth - as
‘tranquillity, recollected in emotion’…

…But sadly, already, in these economic downturn times –
Blackwells offer ‘3 for 2’ on CarolAnn Duffy’s rhymes…

Balkan Nightmares

The ghosts of history haunt the Balkans.
Ancient passions, unbending hatreds
turmoil the region.
Painful tragedies of the past
are recycled by memories.
Permanent hostage of bound
and determined remembrance,
Race, religion and poverty clash
in violent convulsions.

Ethnic warfare and ruthless fright
sweep across nations,
fuelled by explosions of grief, revenge
and fear.
They are immersed in horror,
terror, chaos and bloodshed,
the sufferings of children,
the sorrows of fathers,
and the agonies of widows.

In 1453 the Turks led by Mehmet II
captured Constantinople
and the Eastern Roman Empire
ceased to exist.
The Ottomans became the new masters
of the Balkan provinces,
ushering in long centuries
of rugged struggles for freedom
and independence.

In 1697 Prince Eugene of Savoy
conquered Sarajevo,
A historic city that he left burned down
and plague-infected. Although by 1717
the prince liberated Belgrade
and the Danube region from Ottoman rule,
he failed to retake the Bosnian capital.

In the 19th century Austria-Hungary
annexed Bosnia, but together with Albania,
it remains a Muslim stronghold
in the heart of Europe.

In one summer day in 1914
the driver of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
took a wrong turn to Franz Josef Street,
at the edge of the Latin Bridge in Sarajevo.
On an official visit, the heir presumptive
to the Austro-Hungarian throne was riding

James Dean

Orbits of Saturn fade like sate persiflage
Nothing there beyond the décor of rouge
No one lives in fame
Everyone shines
Words are vice
Her suicide note was perfect
They ramble like bloated poets
Love and pride in rhyme
I am in love with your money
Your fakeness
Your phony love sonnets
Your boring Helen Steiner Rice verse
I am the antithesis
We are made for one another
Cain Slew Abel
I write east of Eden
James Dean on a swing

Eastern Intrigue

As the sun rises in the east
As the wind blows the fog across the sea
As the hand of man creeps across the face of the world
Caught in a web of glamours
Persian perfume and oriental eyes
Yogi in knots and sufi wise
Master sublime and swami high
Through in some voodoo on the side
And a dash of the old kung fu
Lord you got me strung out on eastern intrigue
Chapter six and verse eleven
If you wanna get to heaven
Youve got to ask the man who owns the property
Ya gotta dance your dance
And do your act
And get his big attention thats a natural born fact
Im on my knees, one question please
Will the real God please stand up?
Jesus and moses, mohammed, and sri krishna
Steiner, gurdjief, blavatsky, and bhudda
Guru maharaji, reverend sun myung moon
On the banks of the holy nile
As the palm tree sways at the base of the sphinx
neath a crescent desert moon many thousands
Younger than ours
In fact, forget about time completely
Think of it in the abstract please
Think of the swaying tropic trees
One of your many destinies
Like having a hot peyote tea
In the palace of fu manchu
Lord you got me strung out on eastern intrigue
Sell your wife and pawn your heater
Buy the new bhagavad gita
Do the pranayama til your spine gets sore
Ill tell you for free
cause God told me
We checked it with the pope and so we all agree
Im on my knees, one question please
Will the real God please sit down?
