Wedding Bells/Let's Turn Back The Years (feat. Lucinda Williams)

I got the invitation that you sent me,
You wanted me to see you change your name
I couldn't stand to see you wed another
But dear I hope you're happy just the same
I planned a little cottage in the valley,
I even bought that little band of gold
I thought some day I'd place it on your finger,
But now the future looks so dark and cold
Wedding bells are ringing in the chapel
That should be ringing now for you and me
Down the aisle with someone else you're walking
Those wedding bells with never ring for me
Darling, let's turn back the years
And go back to yesterday
Let's pretend that time has stopped
And I didn't go away
We had our love to make us happy
Love wasn't meant to bring us tears
Love like ours should never die
So, darling, let's turn back the years
I fancy that I see a bunch of roses
A blossom from and orange tree in your hair
While the organ plays

Will I Ever Write The Poem That Will Take You Away Into Another Higher World Within Yourself?

WILL I EVER WRITE THE POEM THAT WILL TAKE YOU AWAY INTO ANOTHER HIGHER WORLD WITHIN YOURSELF?

Will I ever write the poem that will take you away
Into another higher world within yourself?
That will move you into feeling the beauty of life
The long deep beauty that lifts the soul beyond itself
That makes you want to live and live more and more?

Will I ever write the poem that makes the music you are
Go beyond any feeling you have ever known
In ecstasy at your life for whatever it is in its own inner song?

Turn Down the Volume

'Who wants to be stuck.
Crushed.
Or caught rushing...
Into the arms of another lover!
Give it time, Amanda!
Nick will not see this
As a friendship social call!
He will catch us on the Bear rug...
And assume we've had sex,
Just because we are bare ass and naked!
And since we are...let's have sex! ? '

I thought you said you were bringing something home,
That was wholesome, natural and down to Earth?

~It is, Ma!
The message is of 'piece'.
It's raw and natural!
Down to Earth...
And the video supplier says
The packing is recycable!
And you said I should say NO to sex! ?
I have!
But, Ma...
You said nothing about me watching it gettin' done!
And this ain't even 'porno' no more.~

Well...
Turn down the volume.
I will not have 'that' kind of talk spoken in my home!
And they wonder why you kids have filthy mouths today! ?

To The Rock That Will Be A Cornerstone Of The House

Old garden of grayish and ochre lichen,
How long a rime since the brown people who have vanished from
here
Built fires beside you and nestled by you
Out of the ranging sea-wind? A hundred years, two hundred,
You have been dissevered from humanity
And only known the stubble squirrels and the headland rabbits,
Or the long-fetlocked plowhorses
Breaking the hilltop in December, sea-gulls following,
Screaming in the black furrow; no one
Touched you with love, the gray hawk and the red hawk touched
you
Where now my hand lies. So I have brought you
Wine and white milk and honey for the hundred years of famine
And the hundred cold ages of sea-wind.

I did not dream the taste of wine could bind with granite,
Nor honey and milk please you; but sweetly
They mingle down the storm-worn cracks among the mosses,
Interpenetrating the silent
Wing-prints of ancient weathers long at peace, and the older
Scars of primal fire, and the stone
Endurance that is waiting millions of years to carry
A corner of the house, this also destined.
Lend me the stone strength of the past and I will lend you
The wings of the future, for I have them.
How dear you will be to me when I too grow old, old comrade.

The Pilot That Weath'd The Storm

If hush'd the loud whirlwind that ruffled the deep,
The sky, if no longer dark tempests deform;
When our perils are past, shall our gratitude sleep?
No!--Here's to the Pilot who weather'd the storm!

At the foot-stool of Power let flattery fawn,
Let Faction her idols extol to the skies;
To virtue in humble resentment withdrawn,
Unblam'd may the merits of gratitude rise.

And shall not His memory to Britain be dear,
Whose example with envy all nations behold;
A Statesman unbiass'd by int'rest or fear,
By pow'r uncorrupted, untainted by gold?

Who, when terror and doubt thro' the universe reign'd,
While rapine and treason their standards unfurl'd,
The heart and the hopes of his Country maintain'd,
And one kingdom preserv'd 'midst the wreck of the world.

Unheeding, unthankful, we bask in the blaze,
While the beams of the sun in full majesty shine;
When he sinks into twilight, with fondness we gaze,
And mark the mild lustre that gilds his decline.

Lo! Pitt, when the course of thy greatness is o'er,
Thy talents, thy virtues, we fondly recall!
Now justly we prize thee, when lost we deplore;
Admir'd in thy zenith, but lov'd in thy fall!

O! take, then--for dangers by wisdom repell'd,
For evils, by courage and constancy brav'd--
O take! for a throne by thy counsels upheld,
The thanks of a people thy firmness has sav'd!

And O! if again the rude whirlwind should rise!
The dawning of Peace should fresh darkness deform,
The regrets of the good, and the fears of the wise,
Shall turn to the Pilot that weather'd the storm!

The Only One That Will Be Resented

If the reality of truth is kept from someone,
And eventually they are confronted with it.
The only one that will be resented,
Is the one who came...
To offer a solution to their delusions.
That's the one that will be defamed.

From The Past to the Future

From the past to the future
From the future to the past
It is comforting to know,
That I am not alone.
For my God is there
To help me, to guide me.
He was there in the past
He will be there in the future
To all of those,
Who believe in Him.

on a Sunday back to the past that Papa left

on a Sunday
the man returns to the sea
to clean the foreshore
teeming with coconuts
from thick grass
bad grass and beetles
that eat buds and
kill

on a Sunday back
to the past again
clearing some forests
of memories
therein

one seeks a redemption
for what had been
putting some seeds again
as anticipations of
the future
that may never come

Images Of The Past....

the images of the past
sometimes project themselves in the screen
of our minds

rivers where children bathe freely
boats that row to the crystal blue sea
green mountains to climb

we are amazed by said wondrous views
and the joys of our voices
reverberate the atmosphere
echoing on the corners of our memories

we shut the journey and we take hold of the present.
the grip now is too hard
because the winds are too strong and we are afraid
that to the past we will be forever blown

The Past Was Goodly Once

The Past was goodly once, and yet, when all is said,
The best of it we know is that it's done and dead.

Dwindled and faded quite, perished beyond recall,
Nothing is left at last of what one time was all.

Coming back like a ghost, staring and lingering on,
Never a word it speaks but proves it dead and gone.

Duty and work and joy--these things it cannot give;
And the Present is life, and life is good to live.

Let it lie where it fell, far from the living sun,
The Past that, goodly once, is gone and dead and done.

Looking At The Past...

when i look at the past
i will always have something to say

i can write all the days of my life
simply glancing at it like it is

a movie watched by Howard
for months without a bath or break

i do not think that it is crazy
to go over the past images over and

over again, there is much to see and
say, for in there, i had always been

muted, i was blinded, in such a
deafening helplessness

now, i must ceaselessly mention it
to the world, as a matter of coping up

on such a short time, on such a
breath that is so limited, so so limited.

The Promise That Nothing In Us Here Is Wasted....

the next journey is when we carry nothing

although we want to carry a basket of flowers

or a a memory of love & friendship

the rule says it clearly: you carry nothing with you

we are light as air passing by a flash of images of all time spent

the past that we let go with a smile (or perhaps some sighs)

the present drips from our fingers like water from a faucet

and the future the comes with wings and light and faith

that nothing ends without any meaning at all

that somehow every inch of our existence is justified

in the shores of eternity.

Regretting The Past

Everyday I wonder if the choices I made were right
Reliving those times in my memories
Over and over until I doubt my reasons why

Nothing can stop me from going in the future
Or change what I'll do that very second in the present
My choices can not even take me back to the past

I never understand why everything doesn't change when it happens
Allowing me another chance to correct my mistakes
Without looking back into the past that I sometimes will despise

Though I can't change how things happen in my life
Why is it hard to change what I have already done
Reliving the day and changing the future

The Past...now, It Is Just You And Me.

i speed away from the past,
it has no use
i tell myself the future has more to say
i scurry for the present items: a pen and paper
draw a leaf, imagine the sun, and a little space
for something that is yet to come,

last nigh the dreams take revenge
it is the past that i choke and bury and they are too many
a gun aims by the road towards the glass window
piles of books in the dormitory still unread
the lights do not turn off till morning
the food in the platter is light and i so think is deficient for my hunger
there are those who stay in the house laughing
about what i am doing....and the car is missing..

i am quick to this. i wake up, turn on the switch and face the
fluorescent light,
the magic has always been
a simple glass of cold water,

then i am back again: it is only between you and me and the rest?
mere peripheries.

The past looms

With me die
Not blood and flesh alone,
Nor bone and skin alone.
With me die
The value of things held,
The love for persons made.
With me die
Gratitude, indebtedness,
And remembrance too.
With me die
Secrets shared and withheld,
Secrets of others, known.
With me die
The castle I have built
Around me over years.
When I die
It is the past that looms,
Not the future in wait

The Hope That Will Always Be There

most of the time
i waited for the final showdown
of this battle
between good and evil

for the moment the bad one
wins and
teases me
for not siding with it

but i am attuned to
waiting
i always hope
that at the end it is only the good
that triumphs

for the meantime i watch the evil one
laugh and dance
and drink
all the luxuries of this
earth

there is this patience of
faith
that never falters

Waiting For The Time That I Have No More To Say

i am simply waiting
for the time when i have nothing anymore
to say and
then i will just sit there
in the corner looking at the sun
that will no longer rise or set,
not
really static,
it simply passes,
as though nothing happens.

and
when i have nothing more to say
it simply means,
goodbye,
i have freed myself
at last,
from the bondage
of speech from
the opression
of words,
from the anxiety
of the syllable,
from the demands
of certain
letters to finally form
a word,
from the
mandate of a blank slate
searching for
its own meaning
in whatever i speak.
and write
