The Secret Countess

The hammer has fallen
The red has come
The richer are fleeing
The poor they shall become
Petyas teeth cut on gold
But know his sisters hands are bleeding
From harder work than she’s ever known
Scrubbing and polishing
In an English house of old

Gone are the furs
The silks in the snow
The string of pearls
The pretty little bow
The diamond brooches
The carriages at twelve
The long ball dresses
On the marble stone floor

The Grasinky’s jewel sparkle
In a greedy cooks eyes
Lost in a world without trust
All she has is a smile
No now that is lost
So the devil arrives
With her endless demands
A beaut outside
Ugly within
No care of the servants work
With their hands and heart

Perfection is surely just a dream
But her demand it is
For simple is common
Her wedding must be just so
No sweet songs
Or old fashioned dress
No ‘handicapped child’
Shall follow her trail
But there is no love in her eyes
Just unforgiving desire
To be a title

But in amongst her servant ranks
A high class beauty lurks
Her ballet bow
That shivers hearts
Lies surround her
But the truth she always speaks
And dear little Ollie
With her strong little mind
Nothing defeats her
‘Cept the devil in disguise
But pure sweet Grasinky
Gives her a smile
A story
A dog
A diamond within

Closer and closer the wedding draws
And further and further they do split
All he wants is Anna’s hand
Of course it shall never be
Too much of a gentleman is he
Finally the wedding eve ball
But the secrets out
The countess reviled
He begs
One dance they share
The orchestra know
They wish it will last
But it’s all too short

The bells chime
But where is she
Sweet little Ollie
A promise he made
If she is not there
I do -I shall not say
The butler loyal and true
Is there to save the day
Well paid cousins
Locked in the tower
Acting madly
She runs and screams
He laughs and cheers

Anna leaves for home
All is over
The embarrassment too much
She smiles when she arrives
In her maids little flat
Her old cook comes
Laden with her jewels
A chest of money
A bolt of silk
All the others shimmering shining
Back to the rightful owner
Maybe the world is not so trust less

Then a letter arrives
Two more days Anna must work
How very rude her mother cries
But back she must go
She serves a meal
But hiding behind
The carved cabinet
Her one true love
In shy happiness
Her wedding was a smile
All the country quaint
With sweet little Ollie
Marching proudly
A big smile on her face
No single eye in the church was dry
And the secret countess
Was true again.
