I Was Only Joking
'I was only joking! '
You know...
Many years ago,
I heard those same comments...
Said to me by a few folks.
Those who 'still' socialize and meet.
Doing those 'same' things,
As they tease each other and greet.
On the same neighborhood streets.
In discussions of a yesterday.
As if those 'yesterdays' have not gone away.
Some of them have unruly children,
Who lack discipline.
And they even brag about,
How they 'hang' around and party...
With their teenage grandchildren.
Don't get me wrong.
I still may hum a few old songs.
I've been accused of taking my life too seriously.
And that I 'think' too much.
And with that I must agree.
But at the age of...
How old are you?
Over fifty?
I am...63.
'I was only joking! '
Trust me,
This I know.
But something inside me wishes...
People like you would grow.
And I don't believe,
I will ever see...
Those wishes come true!
Do you?
'I was only joking! '
And you are too sad,
To bring a smile to my face.
Or even think I should laugh!
I'm glad my seriousness,
Kept my steps moving with a forward pace.
'I was only joking! '
I know.
You told me so.
I just don't have it in me,
To cry!
Goodbye.
