The Nine Manifestations of the Mother
Sailaputri
Trident in thy right hand...
Kamandal, an ascetic’s bowl in the left
A crescent adorning thy divine head
Daughter of Himavant, the King of Mountains
Parvathi, Hymavathi—the giver of boons
Salutations to thee, my Mother…
Brahmacarini
Penance to be Shiv’s consort
A rosary in thy right hand
Kamandal, an ascetic’s bowl in the left
Resplendent ‘Brahmacarini’
Meditating upon thee
Gives us focus and directs our hearts
Towards the divine
Salutations to thee, my Mother…
Candraghanta
Vessel crystalline filled with
Nectar of eternal joy
O, DurgaAlso known as Candraghanta,
The bearer of bell-moon that adorns thy head
Meditating upon thee wipes off
Envy and violence and instills
Valor and courage in our hearts
Salutations to thee, my Mother…
Kushmaanda
The bearer of the egg of samsaara
O, Mother, also known as Kushmaanda
Thou manifest as the resplendent life-force in all
Ensconced on tiger
Thou wipe disease and sorrow
And bless the world with health and wealth
Salutations to thee, my Mother…
Skandamaata
Mother of the Chief of the Army of Gods
With baby Skanda playing in your divine lap
Meditating upon thee gives the mortals
The divine aura
Thou cleanse and prepare the womb
To welcome the seed blessed with wisdom divine
The facilitator of moksha
Salutations to thee, my Mother…
Kaatyayani
Daughter of Maharishi Kaatyaayan
Meditating upon thee yield blessings myriad
Gopikas in Dwapara worshipped you
Bearing Varada and Abhaya mudras
Wielding a scimitar and a lotus
Thou facilitate dhrmartha kamamoksha
Salutations to thee, my Mother…
Kaalaraatri
Described as the one who generates
The fear of death in the mortals
Thy skin is of thick unknown darkness
Donkey is the vehicle
And you wield a club of thorns and a scimitar
Thy dispel ghosts and render pretas lifeless
O, Mother, Redeemer of Fear
Salutations to thee…
Mahagouri
One who transformed her complexion
To a resplendent fairness
O, Mahagouri, meditating upon thee
Removes foul thoughts
We need thine blessings, o, Mother
Salutations to thee…
Sidhidhatri
Sidhida one who makes moksha possible
Thou, the presiding deity
Divine Catalyst for us to acquire all sidhis
In no time thou lead us to the finale with ease
Salutations to thee, my Mother…
O, Mother
Remover of foul thoughts and actions
Accumulated over the past ten lives
To lead us mortals from darkness to light
O, Mother who keeps the demons at bay
Salutations to thee…
The nine manifestations you assume
In the process of destroying the demon
My salutations to each of thy manifestations
O, Mother…
