Sonnet: Let Me Be …

God, let me be a bird upon a tree,
That hurts no one but sings melodious songs;
And leads a life, doing no sin, carefree;
And yet, some put it to the fiery-tongs!

God, let me be a pretty butterfly,
That flies in search of nectar all its life;
And like a lazy man, let me not die,
And sleep log-like in filth, despite soul’s strife.

God, let me be a snail bellying across;
And carrying on its back, its house of shell!
What is the use of human life with gloss,
Leading a sinful life/ landing in Hell?

God, let me be like humble servant Job
With forbearance, and get my Heavenly robe.
