Earth Day Blues
So Not in the mood for a party.
The sky is gray with smog,
Industrial emissions
threaten future generations.
Toxic oceans, acid rain,
poison in the food chain.
I’ve got the Earth Day Blues.
Ozone thinning brings
extreme weather, brings
climate change and
the sun’s golden rays
now burn our crops
and melt the great glaciers.
Oceans rise, farmland floods.
Massive waves of
climate migrants moving north.
Tropical diseases and
plague to follow.
I’ve got the Earth Day Blues.
Forests stripped away,
fresh scars upon ancient green hills,
slow to heal.
Toxic stew, CO2,
nuclear waste dumps
hidden beneath our homes.
After the loss of the habitat,
comes the end of the species.
And we’re not the first to go.
It’s giving me the Earth Day Blues.
Still, it’s spring.
pink and white blossoms
dance bravely on limbs.
Green sprouts replace decay.
Still children play,
robins sing
and we celebrate,
Earth Day.
Still, I’ve got the Earth Day Blues.
