The Creation of John McCornack
By the shores of Okie-homee,
By the dusty, sunburnt trailway,
Stood the wigwam of McCornack,
(Man-child of the corn-McCornack) .
Twas a time in days before-yee,
'Fore the earth's primordial goo days;
Days of frontier exploration,
(Days when men were men-the yore days) .
Brutal was the landscape'round him,
Cowboys, Indians, scorpions plenty,
Tumbleweed and snakes abounding;
Threat'ning life of John-McCornack
Learned to hunt when just a ba-bee.
Stalked the prairie dog and hen.
Bagged coyote for the table;
Fed the village well-McCornack.
Sporting youth in Okie-homee,
Searching for a game for skill
Dreamed up hoops for competition;
Taught his manly friends-the hoop-game.
Soon there was a statewide tour-nee.
Playing guard and forward jointly,
Whipped their butts in just two quarters.
(Named to hall of fame-McCornack.)
Enterprising was the teen-lad,
Throwing pots to sell to lnjuns.
Sold the rattles from the rattlers;
Sold them back to snakes-McCornack.
Enterprising was the man-lad.
Had a chain of roadside stands
Selling shares in oil wells local.
(Holes were long since dry-the oil holes.)
Standing on a dusty heap-ee,
Noting that his neck was red'ning,
Sighing that he'd done it all,
Climbed aboard a mule-McCornack.
To the west was Califor-nee,
To the south, New Orleans shoreline;
But the mule chose going northward,
Bearing Okie's son-McCornack.
