Stag At Bay
Standing forlorn
Alone, miserable, hiding in a thicket
Bloody and weary
Defeated for his harem
By a younger stronger stag.
No longer king
Waiting for wounds to heal
Vowing to fight again
Bringing the young pretender down
Chasing him from the herd.
The hunting wolves howl
And he lifts his head in dread
Knowing they have found his scent
And prepares to meet them
Fighting his last battle.
