River Reeds
On a sunless afternoon
Water speeds doglike
Down the mountains
Along river channels,
Swirling and gurgling,
Upon reed beds
Shining auricomous.
They are perched on a buff,
Forming an island,
An arc, a golden circle,
Laughing in the wind,
Singing melodies,
Rising from the river
Mellifluent and blonde.
Even on a cold evening walk
Along the river,
Where unleashed dogs
Turn home crestfallen,
The self-effacing reeds
Have never fallen down
To the punishing rain.
