Groundhog Day
February 2nd, a rodent’s inane holiday
To predict whether Spring is near or far away
Rooted in Candlemas tradition
The groundhog was a later addition
“For as the sun shines on Candlemas Day
* “So far will the snow swirl until May”
People flock to Gobbler’s Knob
To see the marmot do his job
A woodchuck named Punxsutawny Phil
Sees his shadow and we get a bitter pill
Six weeks of winter, still
But if he sees skies cloudy and gray
Spring is only 42 days away.
