Carnival of False Realities
Brightly coloured
Candy-land,
Sweet smells
Sweet tastes,
Grinning smiles
(too wide for their faces;
they don't know any better)
Everyone is happy.
Too happy.
But look!
Beneath the shallow crust,
Behind the glitz
And trashy sparkles,
Balanced plates are smashed,
Little kids are lost,
The painted clowns are crying.
Can't you see?
The ceiling is cracked.
Mildewed wallpaper.
Fear seeping in through the gaps,
Dripping, dark as blood
Onto the people below...
Rusting fun,
Eating away at love,
Leaving only the skeletal remains
Of lust, and greed.
All that's left
To save us now
In one, half deflated,
Balloon of hope.
