Margarine Days
lost in those margarine days returning
Those big white sliced days
The bleached overalls of my learning
The ink smudge and the after school grudge
And the hungry plates of them and us
The H.P and the annual debt
The shopping queues
And the washing line heavy with all you could not get
In the january sales
The broken doors forced entry in to consumer paradise
For one day only!
Then the bleak dark mornings rising to loneliness
bills and loan sharks at the door
Dole and discontent
Strike and three day weeks
Flares and flares
Bad fashion and eating in
Mash and cuppa soup
Lights out early
Waxy candles melting into night
Again the tide is turning
The grey consumer shuffles in his council block
Keeping his dreams of 'kiss me quick'
Hidden in is old shoe box
And under his bed when he's found dead
A half eaten stick of brighten rock!
