Misery of Addiction
My drunken friend, after too many beers,
Sat on the bench, fighting back his tears,
'I've tried so hard to stay off the drink
And you know what my wife and children will think! !
Is there no end to this hopeless craving?
It's my body, not soul, that really needs saving! !
Some turn to religion - so it seems -
But are they grasping at straws in their shattered dreams?
It's no good telling me something trite,
No way I'll be able to stay sober tonight! !
I just want to drown this endless sorrow
And I don't really care what happens tomorrow! !
