The Wish To Age
Why did I always wish to age?
As a child I strived for the adult stage.
But having reached it I now know
that I was foolish to want to grow.
For it's not that great now that it's here.
I wish I could make the years disappear.
Oh how I played and romped about.
Kids don't worry about challenge and doubt.
My mother would say, 'supper's on.'
Before she knew it I was gone.
Ate so fast. Had things to do.
Another one died but it wasn't you.
So removed from finality,
thinking only about being free.
Watched the grown-ups bill and coo,
something I though I'd never do.
Found the piano or it found me.
Ingested the tones, the harmony.
Started to mature. Started to age.
Left youth behind in a gilded cage.
