Last Summer
it was a lightning bug summer
we danced in blackberry water that mirrored the stars
spanish moss leaping with the breeze
jagged lighting piercing the sky with fleeting scars
it was a sunset season
the golden torch bleeding into the sky
setting my whole world afire
melting your brown stare into gold copper eyes
it was a firework frenzy
blue and red sizzling through my veins
it was a furrowed brow of a night
the morning weeping with quiet rains
it was another lovestruck august
after another doubtful july
my sleep heavy with honey dipped dreams
the moon bigger with every balmy sigh
it was the summer of me
left to taste the season's syrupy lust
it was the summer of teased affections
chasing hope's breath on a wind with every surging gust
it was a loss of innocence
as out of a skin of naivety i climbed
the last glimpse of life through a child's eyes
it was the first summer
it was the last time
